If Phil Redmond is Chair of the judging panel again they’ll win it. He was on record as saying how much he hated Southampton when he lived here (thus, we had no chance v Bradford) and “much preferred Portsmouth”. He’ll do it out of spite.

It'll be a city that "needs investment" (i.e. a bit of a dump). A city like Southampton is never considered to "need investment" ... I doubt Portsmouth will win either, they are tarred with the same brush as us, being Southern.

Sadly they probably have a good chance of winning it as on the subject of fiction, they’ll no doubt trumpet the fact Charles Dickens was born there. As was Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Both fucked off at a very young age but that’ll be conveniently overlooked.

But as we know from local skate  folklore, both Dickens and IKB were pioneers in their field, and founder members of the Victorian era 657 crew. IKB among other things was keen on railway stations and saw them as a meeting point for ‘firms’ to get together and travel around the country for a punch up.

Don't forget  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle played in goal for them.  IKBs father Marc was a French asylum seeker who came to Britain via the USA to escape the French Revolution, I am sure the few will embrace him as they have other immigrants.

And Peter Sellers and Jim Callaghan, although I can understand them keeping quiet about him.

He probably got stuck in the Soton traffic for 3 hours and didn't get to see anything except the avenue, jury's inn roundabout and empty cycle ways.
