Something to maybe take your mind off the crap we are suffering at the moment!

Have to say looking at the line up it is going to be a great day. Many faces from Saints from the 90's side and even woggy :)

I've done a lot of work for Hughesy on his building projects on the IoW and I'll vouch for the fact that he's actually a really decent guy so good luck to him

.

I don't doubt that for one minute. Really.

But he's just doing a job. I've done sterling service for my employers, anyone want to give me a testimonial?

And hundreds/thousands of people do work for charities in the Southampton area for no reward or desire for reward.

Well as it's an Eastleigh testimonial for an Eastleigh player/coach who happened to start his career at Saints so I think it's only right that Eastleigh fans judge whether it's right for him to have a testimonial. Certainly he doesn't deserve a saints one but no one is saying he does. Whether he deserves one at all? The fans will decide that. I guess he didn't earn a hell of a lot in his short lived career so it's not like he'll never have to work again but the money he earns will make life easier.

Ultimately it's up to the people who choose to go. I'm not an Eastleigh fan so it's not for me to judge but I'm guessing even a full house won't earn him that much. I hope he has a good day though.

I'm not trying to belittle DH. And I don't know what his circumstances are. But all things being equal, if i don't work the bills won't be paid and within a few weeks I'll be bust. And I expect that the same for most on here. Why does DH qualify for charity??

And a sticky on a Saints site?

I think it is a 'sticky' on a Saints site because if you look at the names involved (Channon / Le Tissier / Beattie / Dodd / Benali / Lundekvam etc) it is very much Saints related.

There are currently no good players playing for Southampton (Kelvin Davis aside), how many of the current crop would have played alongside Channon or Le Tiss?

Those of us who remember Dave when he played for Saints remember a promising young player, who represented England Youth and Wales U-21.

He had a bad run of injuries and had to retire early from the professional game. Instead of walking away from football as so many do, rather he got stuck into the non-league game with Eastleigh, and has played a huge part in them getting to where they are today.

Maybe ask Channon, Le Tiss or even Bruce Grobbelaar (who is flying in from far away) exactly why they are turning up to play? None of them are getting paid for giving up their day, and current pros James Beattie and Matthew Oakley are turning out at vitally important times for their current respective football clubs.

I think the line up speaks volumes for the respect current and ex pros have for Dave, what we would give for a few of those names to be pulling on the red and white shirt now.

At £5 a head, which is a lot less than you would pay to see Eastleigh play a league game and about £20 less than what you pay to watch the current bunch of **** kickers at SMS, it is real value for money. Under 12's go free and there is a real emphasis on it being a family day out. I doubt Dave is earning much out of it; there will be a bunch of costs involved and I wouldn't expect more than a couple of thousand to be there.

Above all it is a chance for many of us to take a step down memory lane and see some of our old favourites, which my friend is possibly why the Mods have made this a sticky...

I don't think of it as a money making exercise - it's really a reunion for old time's sake. All those names bring back a lot of good memories; the days when we had a lot of passion and fight in our team. Even if some of them had rather less ability than necessary to play in the top division, mentally they were much stronger than today's bunch. For the players involved, surely it's a case of making an effort for an old friend.

So what's the problem?

If people don't want to go they won't and he won't get any money.

If they do want to go they will and he will get some money.

If you've been a good boy I'm sure you'll get a gold watch at retirement m8 :)

Hmm. I think this is more about Eastleigh FC promoting Eastleigh FC than anything else. If anyone has got a spare £5 i think Saints current need is greater.

Eastleigh football club are fighting for survival in the same tough financial climate that we are all struggling through. If our need is ' greater ', it's only because of our own mis-management. Hughesy has done a helluva a lot for Eastleigh and I for one don't begrudge him that just cos ' I can't get one '.

As Jackie above said It's more about the occassion and bringing together a bunch of famous faces for people to enjoy a good day out ..... If you don't agree with it Docker, then just donate your fiver to Saints and stay at home and do a jigsaw rather than belittle other peoples efforts ;)

IMO of course :D

Get a grip. Hughesy is a good guy, and all the old boys are getting together and it might even be a laugh. Protest as much as you like if someone forces you to go, but shut up otherwise.

This sort of post has ruined this forum.

its a chance to unwind and enjoy some our old hero's

if Eastleigh think DH deserves a testamonial what the hell has it got to do with us?

FFS, if this was all about the money, they'd be charging for kids, and charging at least double for adults.

It's an old boys kick-about to recognise Hughesy's services to Eastleigh. Fair play. I grew up with a lot of these players in our squad, and I'm happy to pay a fiver to have the opportunity to show my appreciation to them, and David.

I agree completely.

One thing that does strike me as odd though -

Bruce Grobbelaar:

I may be missing something, but is there not more than a strong whiff that he didn't exactly "give his all" when he was at Saints? Seems odd that he should be involved in something like this.

Leave off the nasty comments about DH getting a testimonial. His time at Saints was cut short by dodgy knees and I'd rather put my money in the pocket for him than players who have had ten years' worth of Premiership wages that they've gambled away or spent on Lamborghinis.

Once again for the hard of hearing. I don't doubt Hughesy is a good guy. I don't doubt he has done a great job for Eastleigh. What I'm questioning is..

1. Why he is more deserving than anybody else. Have a charity game and give the money to a Cancer charity or similar.

2. Eastleigh FC motivation for the game. Are all the profits from the bars etc etc going to 'the cause' or into EFCs coffers, who are always keen to make money off of Saints fans.

3. Why in Saints darkest hour, a Saints web site has as it's top post a promotion for David Hughes and EFC?

But you're right about one thing, this kind of post is ruining this site. It would be far nicer if everyone simply agreed.

It's been a tough season for all of us mate, but you seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder on this issue.

I commend you for caring so passionately about charity, the bar takings at a non-league football club and football forum democracy.

Rage against the machine and all that, but is it really worth getting so militant about a day that essentially involves a £5 note, half a lager and a few overweight blokes playing football in close proximity to a bouncy castle?
