trousers Posted 14 April, 2009 Share Posted 14 April, 2009 Sorry if posted elsewhere but I don't remember it being quoted elsewhere.... I was reading Kelvin's captain's notes in the match day programme yesterday and he said (words to the effect of): "It's a shame JP didn't take the 2nd last minute free kick vs Watford because I'm sure he would have scored!". I guess he's saying it partially in jest and in retrospect, but doesn't a captain have any influence on who takes free kicks during the game these days? Or did it all happen too quickly on the night for such a critical decision to be made by Kelvin? Or, perhaps this is a good example of why keepers don't make best captains in all scenarios? Papa Shango Posted 14 April, 2009 Share Posted 14 April, 2009 Golden boy Surman snatched the ball, because he wanted his moment of glory. I think pretty much everyone else there agreed that Saeijs should have taken it.

Stu Man Do Posted 14 April, 2009 Share Posted 14 April, 2009 When was the last time he got a set piece on target ? Blackpool away? Seemed an unusual thing for the captain to say in terms of AS's morale might have been better to say something along the lines of better for a right footer :-p Either way should have been JP taking it! As for the Skacel interview ... i didnt realise he could go on a free at the end of the season I thought he signed for 4 years didnt he? :-p Also says he took a pay cut at the start of the season so good on him there at least. Arizona Posted 14 April, 2009 Share Posted 14 April, 2009 bale, two in one game? No, but I do remember the home game to Norwich in the playoff season. Bale took a free kick at the Northam end. It went inches past the right post, bounced against the pole supporting the next and hit the back of the net. Everyone in the Itchen North thought it was in and I was baffled as to why the goal wasn't given until I got home and read the match report. About 5 minutes later Bale did score with a sensational effort into the top left corner at the same end. As for players scoring free kicks... Vignal vs Leicester Skacel vs Yeovil Baird vs. Cardiff Aside from Bale, I think that's about is since we got relegated. So much for set piece specialists Idiakez, Surman, Wotton, Safri and Schneiderlin.

trousers Posted 14 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 14 April, 2009 What did Skacel say in the programme. Saw there was an exclusive interview with him in there Off the top of my head / paraphrasing... That he prefers playing in an attacking midfield role! That he spurned a move to Ipswich because he didn't want to go to another club in the Championship. That he still feels he is still good enough to play 'at the top' and as such is unlikely to be at Saints next season whether we stay up or not. isorry Posted 15 April, 2009 Share Posted 15 April, 2009 I don't know about the 2nd free kick but was anyone else surprised at how much time everyone wasted celebrating the equaliser rather than grabbing the ball and lining up to go for the winner? It brought back memories of Danny Higginbotham doing the same thing against palace the year we got relegated from the Premier League. I would like to have seen more of a desire to win the game and claim 2 extra points.

It's like Beattie's free kick against Arsenal in 2002, or MLT against Wimbledon.
