I think his playing days are over but I would definitely have that wise old head back

as kit man and general helper..great support to the staff and squad.

Bring back Woggy....The Spirit of Southampton is on the return.

I dont know, you mention this on a thread yesterday and ... hey presto!

:)

Yes - love to see Woggy back. Left (in protest) when Lowe returned but a real morale member of the team. Always prepared to come and chat to the kids after games (mine not the ones on the pitch) and all round good egg.

Would love to see him back!

From woggy himself? I presume this is if the MLT consortium get in? If so then great news. Lowe only ever got rid of him because of a personal vendetta. People like woggy are what make the club what it is.

I heard he even offered to work for half pay yet Lowe still sacked him out of spite.

I heard a similar story. Did Lowe sack him or did he leave? Either way he was never of fan of Rupert.

Only saying this as it destroys the myth that some may put out that the staff at SMS respected and liked Lowe. Guess what.. .they didnt either!

I thought he was in his 60's. You can't have a bloke of that age humping kit around and he will only be there again a couple of years before retiring. Surely that job is not important to the new start and we should be concentrating on the real issues. I assume the job has been done since he has been away?

A time when the club still needs to be mean to take on extra staff seems a little self defeating. He must be a nice fella though.

Sorry, who is Woggy?

A bloke called Malcolm Taylor. He'd been around Southampton Football Club for a long time, first as a steward, then he accepted the job of kit-man. He's called Woggy because of his thick curly hair when he was young, and it resembled the hair on the golliwog of the Robinson's jam jar. Very un-PC nowadays, but it was an earlier time.

You can see him in Saints full squad photos in books like In That Number, and also there was a pretty fine interview with him on Javi Igeno's Dream Fans DVD.

Yes, he is a "nice fellow", and IMHO, represents what we mean when we say "The Spirit of Southampton "

His would be a welcome return should he wish to come back

Ageist! lol! ;)

I dont care Nick, as long as Woggy can offer something to the team spirit I'll carry the kit into the van for him after games if he likes ! I remember reading a cracking article on him in The Saints magazine with brilliant pictures of him and Johnny Viafara et al smiling in the changing room. Made me feel good that we at least had a decent, respected and liked kit man. Then Lowe return and he was off.

I dont know how popular he is in the dressing room but having pictures taken for a magazine and people smiling hardly makes it 100% the fact.

Why are you being so argumentative Nick. Do you have any proof at all that he is in any way bad for morale or indeed that he is unpopular? If he returns we will have had a takeover most likely and he will be on nothing wages. He's a good man so it can only really be a positive thing if he returns. I'm struggling to see how it can be a negative.

True... but I am smiling thinking about it, so it obviously had a positive impact on one fan! :)

I would love to see him back. He's given more to this Club than 99% of us reading this thread - and he loves it!

That's a good point. He is a part of the feel good factor. An intangible but unifying spirit that makes supporting Saints good again!

Arguementative!! We have people saying that we are going to have a man in his 60's to return to a job. It in turn will either mean somebody losing their job to facilitate him or an increase in our staff costs. We have just been relegated to L1 ,i was trying to point out that having a kit man return whose job must have been filled is not a priority in my opinion.Everyu penny under new ownership I suspect will be tight as the enthusisam level appears really low. Therefore a shortterm return of a kitman who was not on the radar until he left is not high on my priorities especially if it means that funds will be channelled from elsewhere to make way for him.

If the club can afford extra staff all well and good but is it really that necessary, or a fan appeasement, sounds very similar to MW's arrival ominously IMO

Woggy is a legend. How good would it be to have Woggy and Matty back at the club. :p:smt041:)

Personally I had never heard of him until he left. I doubt 1in 100 saints fans would be able to point him out if asked. It sure is easy to be a legend at saints Lol

Welcome back if so, I expect we'll win a lot more games now we have the old kitman back.Lol

If that is the new feelgood factor for my club then I think it is time to go and do otherthings. The return of a kitman is the new beginning LOOOOOOOOOOl.

Aside from this though, I have noticed less creases in our kits than when Woggy was doing the kit folding. ;)

I can't believe we actually have a thread on this

LOL! I think thats to do with the better quality real shirts the players now have rather than Ruperts cheapo Saintswear replicas.

:)

Great thread this is!

I knew Woggy very well and he always had a smile on his face, loved the club and ALL the players and staff loved him. If we want the Spirit of Southampton back we couldn't do much worse than get him back here in some capacity. The club needs to get back to being a great family club again and Woggy epitimises (not sure about the spelling!!!) everything that made this such a friendly loveable club. I would argue that everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Woggy (apart from one man of course!) will tell you the same.

BRING BACK WOGGY AND LE TISS!!!!!!

What if he was prepared to do it for free? Even if not it's hardly major finance. As I have already said, if this happens it means that a takeover will have gone through so presumably it would be that takeover team paying the wages. Unless you think it's going to be a case of

"Sorry Kelvin we were all set to offer you a new contract but now we have to pay the new kit man 50 quid a week. Deals off."

I don't doubt that he's a nice guy, but on this thread we so far have:

- Lowe sacked him out of spite.

- He left in protest

Classic examples of re-writing history.

Club in financial difficulties. Look at which roles can be cut. Decide the kit/utility man can be one of them. If you look at it financially, he's a wage in a column on a spreadsheet somewhere. If you look at it emotionally, he's in his 60's will probably be less affected by it than Derek the groundsman who has a young family.

Eitherway the budget has to be cut as we have to avoid administration. It's irrelevant how little his salary is, those pesky footballers are on fixed term contracts with big exit penalties. The office staff are on a months notice.

Every little helps.

Go ahead for free. But if you add in:

Woggy £50pw

Steve (Carparks) £120pw

Roger (Security) £180pw

Teresa (Barstaff) £100pw

Geraldine (Secretarial) £250pw

Derek (Grounstaff) £200pw

... then pretty soon you have something that approximates a League 1 footballers salary. That's market forces for you.
