First time anything about him actually being conscious, never mind talking, has been mentioned publically. I do wonder if the people responsible for communicating this have any idea of the sort of things people who haven't seen him and aren't "happily chatting away to him" were thinking might have been the situation, given the initial "potentially life threatening" and then vague "stable" updates. Good news anyway, could have been a lot worse.

That would be nice. But as I am the thought police, I would also like to prevent anyone else having them too. See my avatar for my feelings on this matter.

I think you underestimate the amount of annoyance some people get from other people failing to use their own language appropriately.

League Cup Final on 24th April 1988, in which Danny Wilson scored an equaliser for Luton against Arsenal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Football_League_Cup_Final - Mary's Prayer (by the band "Danny Wilson", hence the "joke") was at number 3 that week (and stayed there the week after). http://www.chartstats.com/chart.php?date=28%2F04%2F1988 Very weirdly I actually remember listening to the chart the week before (Pet Shop Boys Heart was number 1 with Climie Fisher at number 2) in the car on the way back from an autograss racing meeting somewhere near Bath when I was 15. My brain scares me sometimes, along with my need to share information like that.

If we were still at the Dell, where would be in the leagues?

Just to illustrate my point about photofit stadia not all looking alike, here are some other angles on the supposed St Mary's lookalikes. Ok, even when looking at different angles and the layout / roof construction etc I now think Darlington's ground is the MOST similar-looking, but it's only half the size and even that has curved seating (the front seating appears shallower) whereas St Mary's stands are a the same angle all the way down the stand. Here's the much bigger Itchen in comparison : The 4-tier main stand at Boro which Saints don't have. The big expanse of roof behind the stand which St Mary's doesn't have - nor any small stands like this. Leicester is again quite similar, but the "banner" around the front of the stand is distinctive, the scoreboards don't hang down as they do at St Mary's and it looks very different to St Mary's from the sky : compared to St Mary's : Derby has a wonky roof as it has one main stand that's noticeably much bigger than the others and a pile of corporate boxes in the corner. -

It was, but if we didn't have the stadium cost overhead we might have been operating at something near profit and we wouldn't have had that overdraft issue (or necessarily been fielding a team of kids at the bottom of the Championship under an unpopular chairman) - depending of course on whether we were still in the Prem and getting the tv money. 15,000 is a very low ceiling on attendances, but the likes of Wigan are just about coping despite their small crowds. -
The squad deadline was 5pm on September 2nd, so everyone should know who's in and out by now... http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2440123,00.html There's a shortlist of players on this Leeds site from a Leeds journalist's checking of who didn't make the lists : http://www.thescratchingshed.com/2011/09/25-man-squads-the-players-that-missed-out/

Thing is, Darlington and Doncaster's are half the size, Derby's has one stand bigger than the others and an uneven roof, Middlesbrough's wasn't even an enclosed arena when they built it and had a U with one separate stand originally, and the only one that really looks like St Mary's and is a similar size and shape all round is the King Power/Walkers in Leicester. I don't mind having a ground that looks slightly like some others, no-one complained when Archibald Leitch threw together a bunch of similar looking stands back in the day? There's nothing wrong with St Mary's, it's a great place to watch (and play) football. Fwiw I think we'd have gone down at The Dell too, maybe in 2001/2 under Gray with no way to entice someone like Strachan to the club. But without the debt from the stadium we'd be bouncing around the Championship pretty much as we did anyway, though it's unlikely we'd have gone 10 years without some kind of promotion or relegation... -
Seems to have started well in a not-so-great team, kind of like Maynard actually, wouldn't be surprised if we'd bid for him and equally unshocked he didn't sign for us.

Strange the number of people who think he's poor. His injury messed up preseason last year and he clearly never got up to speed with the rest of the squad - unsurprising given his sporadic appearances and tendency to whack long balls at Lambert all the time. This pre-season I thought he looked obviously fitter, sharper and stronger, and he made a number of good runs with the ball as well as looking less troubled by people running at him. His involvement in attacking play was a significant factor in our ability to pass the ball from the back in the first couple of games. He was decent against Leeds, and solid at Barnsley, not launching a ball in the air until Saints were down to 10 men late on at Oakwell. Haven't seen us kick a ball since then, but I have noticed others seeing flaws against Millwall and at Leicester he came off, so maybe he's let his level drop. I can't see Butterfield getting back in though, he was getting caned for pace a lot at the end of last season, particularly behind Guly.

They're probably the two I think fit the best as well.

Big ups the S4E massive.

Tickets now purchased, along with Cardiff for the midweek after. Those, along with Forest home will be my next 3 matches, unless I manage to get Granada v Villarreal tickets on the weekend of 17th.

Chinatown is excellent for cheap food and some clothes, you won't understand a bloody thing on the menu though. Agreed on Century 21 shopping and skating in Central Park. Can't believe how extortionate the taxi fare appears to have got. I'd also say it is bloody freezing with the windchill in Jan/Feb and you will probably want thermals. Getting on the Liberty Island ferry in minus 20 is an experience and no mistake - looked something like this for my mate in 2000. I've stayed at Vanderbilt YMCA in Midtown (near the UN) on two occasions and it's very cheap, you can get 2 person rooms, and though the showers are down the corridor, there are cubicles and it's much MUCH cheaper than any hotel. It is on the East side though, so you have to walk a few blocks to get to the subway.

I also hate pointless signatures, and it would make browsing at work a nightmare for most people. I already have the avatars off for that reason. I like the little "Auto-Save" popup as you type...

I know he *did* when he played for Saints, a few people on here saying he's in Chandler's Ford now though.

Even that doesn't really capture the nature or difficulty of the chances, long and short of it is it doesn't matter if you miss 20 if you score enough to win the match.

http://ridiculousfootball.blogspot.com/2011/09/north-african-penalty-fail.html?spref=tw Can you imagine if Rickie Lambert tried one of these ?

I regard God Save The Queen as my national anthem, I'm from Newport. I also know the first few lines of Hen Wlad Fy Nadau or whatever it's called, but then I also know all of the words to the Canadian and US anthems too. And a bit of Flower of Scotland. And some of Deutschland Uber Alles. Aaaaaaanyway...

It was freakish because that 16 game burst was the only time he came close to the near 2 games per goal peak 2002-4 period at Saints in the top division in 6 years since Saints sold him. The season after he scored one every 12 matches. We're talking about whether he was a has-been when we sold him, which the stats show he basically was. He didn't approach his previous scoring levels at any point with the exception of a spell in the Championship (has-been level for a one-time top scoring Prem striker) and a blip for Stoke on the back of that scoring run. As far as Championship pedigree goes, it's over 2 years since he attained that level, he's only scored 2 goals anywhere since and he's 33 - it would be at best a gamble, he's unlikely to stay productive for long even if he does start scoring, and I suspect some people at the club might have their opinions on whether he'd fit our profile. I should think his wages would rule it out as well. Beattie's success at Saints was entirely down to his fitness level and ability to run for everything to get into scoring positions - he wasn't tricky, he didn't beat people and he scored a lot of straightforward goals - if he can reach those fitness levels again he'd be a success. But he hasn't done that for anyone since he stopped being managed by Strachan.

Supposed Prem Player playing in the Championship scores goals for a while unshock. He did well for 16 matches at Stoke, then followed that up with a goal every 12 matches the following season for them. Overall Stoke scoring record 9 goals in 40 matches over 2 years. The last full season before we sold him to Everton, he got 17 in 45 games for Saints. The two figures aren't comparable. It is statistically proven above that Saints had his best years, 2001/2 and 2002/3 2.21 and 2.04 games per goal in the Premier League, even his 2008/9 Stoke blip was only 2.29. You can't reasonably compare scoring every 1.86 or 2 games in the Championship with his seasons with Saints in the Prem.

Will be, haven't got them yet.

You just wanted to quote my typo(s) ! They have now been amended. Vik's laptop does not like double letter typing !
