Whilst I am pleased for everything Cortese has done and continues to do to take the club forward, including saving our club and getting us back to the top division in quick time, however he has a motive in this which just happens to concide with club success i.e. to increase the owners investment. Matt on the other hand showed true loyalty to Saints at the expense of his income and career and stuck with us through thick and thin (Branfoot) and single handidly kept this club up in the top flight for a decade. Can you really say Matts contribution was insignificant compared to Cortese's? They have both made major and very differing contributions. In fact without Matt it is questionalble whether Cortese would have ever recommended buying the club to Markus in the first place!

The criteria for bigger need to be defined in order to have a definitive answer! criteria could be any or a combination of 1) Historical performance since day 1 2) Performance in the last 20 years of the premiership 3) Current position in the league 4) Support and crowd size now or on average over a number of years 5) Financial backing 6) Worldwide brand recognition and many others Dependant on the criteria used to define "big" the answer could be different

As I recollect there were many well known managers out of work when Lawrie was brought in (as manager designate to Ted who had retired to all intents and purposes). He was a Guardsman and not really a top footballer (Blyth Spartans I think he played for) his only decent management experience was Grimsby! and he probably also needed an interpretor in his early days as no one understood Geordie in those pre Ant and Dec days!
