Dear Alpine, your 'last recourse of a scoundrel' line has just renewed my faith in this site - we need a more Victorian structure to debate on this board, less 'stupid ****' and more 'slippery mountebank'! Good show...

The main feeling being expressed over this situation seems to be disappointment with a degree of sadness, and it's a great shame that one game into the 'promotion' season we have our backs to the wall in both the league and in the media. This policy seems utterly counter-productive and the product of looking for things to tinker with. If SFC were an unstoppable juggernaut in the Premier League knocking teams down 4-0 every week with NC and AP riding high there may be a justification in adopting a 'we don't care' ethos. Right now serious further investment in playing staff is needed, not a furore over a few hundred quid on photographs when most national papers don't print photographs of division three sides anyway! Perhaps we should all turn up tonight with our pocket cameras?...

JDLN got it right, after so many years of being run down by no-mark 'businessmen' (starting with Askham and ending with Lowelife) the expectation of Saints fans is that a fall is just around the corner. If the team that turns up today is the team that finished last season there is not an awful lot to worry about. It's obvious that we badly need cover, particularly in midfield, which needs to be addressed within the next couple of weeks - or sooner depending on what happens this afternoon. If NC is true to his word of aiming for the Premiership pronto there has to be continual investment, but the last thing we need is a load of decent but limited third division players on long contracts in the Championship. It's hard being Mini Real Madrid...

What a car crash! It almost makes you feel sad that we'll pass them on the way up next summer...

To be fair with Turkish fans there is a fine line and a fast turnover between adulation and detestation! Always liked Vassell, and think that he would be a great ambitious signing for Saints. Was there for Bridgey's England debut in 2002 against Holland and Vassell (making his debut also) totally stole the show, all round display. His game is about pace, but he has also got good balance and a lot of power - Lambert may break the 40 goal barrier alongside him! Go on NC, push that season ticket figure up to 15000...

Lol! That should make the Echo Monday then Toomer!...

The word 'mindless noise' has been used to describe this pointless row, and that seems the most apt phrase. I am sure that if during Euro '96 the England contigent had blown recorders (part of our culture, innit...) for 90 minutes during every match that FIFA would have acted, and they should act now to save the spectacle and the nerves of any fan with an IQ higher than 40...

Very much enjoyed the debate Turkish. In support it is a little known fact that Adolf Hitler was a 'strawberry blonde' and was advised by Goebbels in 1931 to use 'Just for Meinen' due to the growing popular use of colour photography. The rest is history! Also, look at how Sarah 'supergob' Ferguson let the side down the other week, do we really need that type of negative PR at the club...

Fondly remember his eccentric warm up routine in the 18 yard box at the Dell when he was with Palace, and the Milton giving him loads of good natured stick (Saints then promptly stuck four past him). Saints fans were generally underwhelmed when he was drafted in to replace the irreplaceable Shilts, but he soon won the crowd over - 100% was the Budgie mantra. Looking back, England had some incredible goalkeeping talent in that era, along with Shilton and Clemence, there was Corrigan, Parkes, Rimmer, Bailey et al. All characters...

Don't think Lallana would be that daft. Exchange Surman and Vokes for Pulis (who must be hanging on by his thumbnails)...

Derek Acora tipped me off KB! Great minds indeed Ron, apologies, just picked the thread up on page two. Posters of a certain age would find the adoption on the theme rather exciting - it would certainly empty the concourses. Not sure who would take on the Bob Todd role in the current set up at SFC...

As a proud Sotonian, I've always liked the thought of Yakety Sax, better known as the Benny Hill show theme. The sight of Alan P dressed dressed as Fred Scuttle emerging from the tunnel at pace with the first team in hot pursuit in a circuit of the pitch would strike fear into the hearts of the opposition! A natural choice...

The best Saints could probably hope for as a provincial team in terms of potential attendance is par with Sunderland or (in the extreme) Newcastle - anything above 40K would be fantastic for the club. As Dav states BARR constructed the ground with the potential for add ons (as per the Stadium of Light) up to around 45K. If Marcus decided that this was desirable he could combine the re-construction with a redesign of the outside skin (cladding) of the building; and with some imagination the end result could be stunning. Good to be a Saints fan at the moment...

We have had intense rivalry with the port of Portsmouth for 600 years and this derby generates passion, pathos, and poison that you simply do not see outside of Celtic v Rangers - the new players, the new management team and the new board need to experience this. This game is live on national television and gives us the chance to show the country our resurgence! COYR!
