Hampshire County Council rationalising to the tune of £55m in 2011/12
TopGun replied to trousers's topic in The Lounge
Qwerty makes a fair point but there is a converse one... there are a great number of selfish, lazy "workers" among the white collar staff at all councils who frankly don't give a toss, go sick for three weeks a year etc and are generally inefficient... they might have to cut it in the private sector now :-O -
I agree with Wade Garrett here. Might as well make the top teams pay top dollar if we are going to sell him, which we don't have to!

You can't spend on the military or hospitals, schools etc without having a capital manufacturing base that creates wealth. There in lies the issue for the UK. -
I don't live in the area now but grew up there with Portswood High Street as main shopping area etc. My folks still live there. Portswood has changed but all areas do. Much more student now etc than previously cos of expansion in Soton Uni plus Solent Uni. Waitrose does well out of the established families but as others have mentioned plenty of cheap places like Farm Foods. Plus Aldi in Bevois Valley. Also a new Sainsbury has permission at the Swaythling end near the Mitre on the old bus depot site. I'd disagree with Essruu's sweeping comment about landlords etc. Most student landlords are entirely aware of their responsibilities and try to ensure they do ok in that area, both in terms of the housing they provide and the tenants they have. The good landlords sign up to a code of conduct with the university anyway so that should be your first stop point Mikey as they will provide you with a list of registered landlords, whether you are a student or not. Essruu's point comes from being a taxi driver - landlords can do bugger all about bad behaviour in taxis or indeed their housing. You have to look after a rented place as anywhere else, so pick your landlord and housemates carefully! I would personally suggest Highfield Lane - out of the student clutter and undergrad hassle in Portswood but places to rent regularly. Bit further to walk to Waitrose but the Crown and the Highfield are decent pubs right on the doorstep.

I think this is a tricky one for all concerned. It clearly depends where you live and how you may have been affected by the coalition policy. Most people agree that cuts had to be made but now these are hitting home with redundancies in the public sector. The day before the Oldham bye-election Manchester City Council announced a requirement for 2,000 job cuts for example. Salford is about to follow with 800. Most of the people affected will blame the Tories and Oldham is in Greater Manchester, albeit a different council. The Tories have also not punished the bankers as they said they would. That still rankles with many people. Bob Diamond, CEO of Barclays says the time for remorse for bankers is over. He is wrong politically. On another note, many people will have drifted left, from Con to LD, from LD to Lab in Oldham anyway along national lines. The LDs had about 25% of the vote at the general election but all the polls now say about 7-9%. The pollsters' consensus is that represents the LDs who are still supportive of the coalition plus a few Con voters who have drifted into LD territory but a huge element of that 25% LD general election vote is now with Labour. Labour has hardly done much to earn it either, Ed has not been great, let's face it. Tricky to tell. Election tomorrow, Labour would win, just!! Where would I vote? Labour, just!

I think it makes bugger all difference as their new board has already stated that they will have little or no money to spend so a new manager will have the same players.

Excellent performance. Things should get even better with this squad.

I'm going out to buy more wine. Another two Saints goals by the time I return please.

I think it was just insurance for Barnard's arrest anyway.

Pardew was arrogant and one-dimensional. Too old school for me also. I like Adkins down to earth but practical approach.

I am going to Gran Canaria at the end of November for seven days, but I'm not expecting loads of sun as it is often overcast at that time of year. However it will be mid 20s Celsius which will do enough to prepare me for a Manchester winter!

I got short shrift from a female colleague in her 40s in the office last week when I was a bit sarcastic about her tickets (with husband) to watch Buble.

Apologies fans for being away! :-) As a relative leftie I have considered this vote for Ed long and hard. First point that has to be made is that Ed won - with the union vote and not because of the union vote. The Labour Party has a clear constitution of vote splits between MPs, members and union members. The union element is quite small, but it did make the difference in this case. That does not make Ed a red as the Torygraph, Daily Hate etc are making out. The eradication of Clause 4 in the mid 1990s has made the Labour Party vote for a leader a fair amd transparent one by any comparison. Now is Ed the man to lead Labour back to government? IMO, he is honest and I like his politics. But his brother David would have appealed to more in the UK and abroad as a credible figure. Maybe Ed will grow into that figure. Will Ed beat the Tories? Well, he has to win the Labour Party at Parliament first. If he does that, then expect him to benefit from a coalition meltdown at some point. How long can Liam Fox keep quiet? How long will Vince Cable accept his role with George Osborne? How long before Simon Hughes says I'm with Charlie Kennedy and p$ss off Clegg? Interesting times my friends!

There is no point hiring a PR guy if you don't listen to what he says.

Not been in for years but was a regular there in the early 1990s. Good memories. -
Don't be silly FM boy.

Well played Baj. It will be great.

Lots of comments there. I'm actually not anti Cortese at all. I think that a manager has to be strong enough to stand up to him and work with him.
-
It should be an excellent race with Alonso on pole and Button alongside... I predict unpredictability!
-
It seems that Nigel Adkins and Eddie Howe have both turned down the opportunity to be the Saints manager after having contact with Cortese. Both these guys seem sensible characters and strong minded individuals. Does this tell us something?
