The Keegan "no goal" for me. A delicious twist at the end when Armstrong, who had strayed marginally offside, made amends by scoring the winner after 89 minutes.

Safe? No way. 4 points off the bottom 3 and 21 to play for. The maths is not difficult. Having said that we are in a very good position IF we maintain our form of the last 2 games. I think this weekend could be pivotal for the reasons mentioned above but nerves and complacency do strange things.

This was the win we really needed. Not just 3 points but a massive confidence boost. We have comprehensively beaten the champions. Up to now we have done well against bottom half teams and poorly against top half teams. We have now well and truly broken that hoodoo. We also held on to a lead. I really hope this is a turning point.

How come west Ham havn't had a penalty yet? They always got them last year. Harry Rednapp is such a lucky man.

Where did the picture come from?

I am gutted by all this and I have serious doubts that it will work but Nigel Adkins would be the first to say "Get behind the team. They always come first". You cannot vocally object to the new manager or the chairman without it having a negative effect on the team on the pitch. Any objections must be outside of game time.

I was amazed when I saw this on BBC News. I was only looking to see if we had signed our new centre back! I am disappointed on many levels but most of of all I am concerned that this will backfire. The timing is truly awful. The new man will need to adapt very quickly or we will go down. Results were picking up and we were all beginning to feel optimistic again. I don't see how this new man can just pick up this team and improve it straight away. He has no premiership expirience or particular record of success. I had already accepted that Nigel might go at the end of the season regardless of whether we stay up or not. I really thought we would get Roberto De Matteo or someone of similar calibre. That would have made some sense but this does not. I wonder if this is because the Liebherr money has run out. The comments about developing our youngsters is good but long term. It also reminds me too much of the awful Dutch days under that awful ex chairman. I really feel for Nigel. He has been a legend for us and can go with his head held very high. He is a man of integrity and it is sad to see him become a victim of our soulless modern game. We have become a laughing stock again. The new man will have to be very, very good or this will precipitate another period of decline.

Going 2-1 up at Manchester City. For a while I dared to dream and I thought it couldn't get much better. I was right but it was a great moment.

How official is this "news" about Ramirez?

Many of the above including Micky Channon's testimonial (only mentioned once even though there were probably 35,000 in the Dell that night). Despite seeing promotions and cup wins I still think Matty's last goal was the most sublime and special moment. So predictable that he would do it but still so very, very special.

Bring back Kelvin. Can't lose!

I can't say anything original but have to agree, for those of us old enough to remember, Highbury '84 was the most gutted, desolate and physically painful I have ever felt after a football match. Reasons: 1) It was a piddly, horrible little goal in the last minute of injury time. 2) We were favourites for the cup in a time when it still meant something. 3) We had a fantastic team. 4) The goal was right in front of the Everton fans who really made us suffer. 5) It was a long way home. 6) We could have gone on to even greater things, attracting even better players and establishing ourselves as a top 3 team. 7) It was unlucky. I can still feel it now.

Who is the best SFC player you saw as a youngster
BallBoy replied to Miltonroader07's topic in The Saints
Mick Channon. He qualifies under both criteria for me because we were both youngsters. It was in the days when I would go go anything: Reserves, 1st team, Youth Cup etc. I went to a Youth Cup game at the Dell and Channon was easily the stand out player. He could run forever and just glide past defenders. He was big, strong and powerful. He scored with an immaculate, angled volley into the opposite top corner that rates as good as any I ever saw him score. He also earned and scored a penalty. I think he was 17 and I told everyone to watch out for him. He proved me totally right and I felt like I had "discovered" him. He had a fantastic career and always played with a smile. A joy to watch. -
There will never be another Keegan signing by anyone. It was total audacity and genius by Lawrie Mac. In today's terms we would have to sign Messi or Ronaldo for just £10million without anyone knowing until the hastily arranged press conference. The few hardened hacks who were there applauded. It sent shock waves through the football community and made front page news.

Bart v Blackpool!!!! Sorry got to be Davis. I am not exaggerating when I say it's the best goalkeeing display I have seen since the Polish "clown" whose name I cannot spell. The reaction of the other players said it all. I don't recall a similar reaction for any of the other candidates. Players understand.

Can't believe we have got to 4 pages on the basis of a totally unsubstantiated thought.
-
No. What we have to preserve more than anything is our momentum. 17th place would leave us struggling to attract players and to compete for seasons to come. I am a realist but I believe Cortese, Liebherr and Adkins have a higher vision. 17th place would define us as strugglers.

Back to the original question: There were lots of defining moments because no single point actually counts more than another but here are 3 from me. 1) Dean Hammond scoring the 1st goal in the Championship. Leeds were regarded as favourites and that moment helped us all believe we were good enough. 2) Dean Hammond again in the derby against Portsmouth. He was intelligent enough to show the linesman that the ball had come off a Pompey player so the goal could be allowed despite Sharp being "offside". He was not abusive but made the point. Goal allowed and cue rapture. It was shortly followed by despair but point gained. 3) The 15-20 minutes in the 2nd half when Kelvin Davis held off Leeds almost single handedly. That's the best goalkeeping "performance" I have ever seen and contributed to a rare smash and grab. Every team needs them. Just 3 moments from an absolutely fantastic season.

Another factor, perhaps not highlighted yet: If we draw and WHU win then the higher the number of goals we score then the more WHU have to score. So a 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 etc is better. Is that right? However, Adkins will set us up to win and I believe we will. I am nervous as hell but it will be a cracking game.

Coventry away form. Won 1, Drawn 6, Lost 15. Goals for 13. Goals against 35. There are no gifts in football but this is as good as it gets. Surely!!!!!!
-
I have only seen it once on the FL programme but I thought the keeper caught him. He was going nowhere and took a step too many before falling. So I thought it was a foul but also a dive.
-
The sending off may even work in our favour as Leeds will now have to "park the bus". A draw would be a reasonable result for us. They may even do to Reading what we did to them.

I feel a worrying sense of complacency from the fans about this game. I am sure Nigel will have the players properly prepared but the crowd can play a part if they start getting restless. Doncaster are a decent side. Much better than their position suggests. On paper this is a home banker but so was Barnsley and we laboured a bit with them. The crowd were subdued. We all need to be on top form to get these points in the bag as early as possible. Some people have started to plan their party already. It's way to soon for that. We are in a striong position but only if we maintain our form.

I was born in Gosport in 1953. Thankfully my family moved to Southampton before any lasting memories kicked in. Lived in Millbrook, Thornhill, Maybush, Lordshill and Woolston. Southampton is my home and I love it. Walking across the Itchen Bridge is hard going these days but it reminds me who I am. I was not brought in a sporting family so I had to discover football for myself. I spent my teenage years kicking a ball around on "the field" in Thornhill. I had a friend called Mike who was not generally a good influence but he took me to a reserve game because it was free. I was hooked. I soon graduated to the big stuff and my first game was a 0-3 home defeat to Chelsea. It didn't matter. I started saving all my pocket money to go to the games and was happy to spend hours queuing to get the best spots in a chocolate box. I have seen the greats from Paine, Davies, Channon, Osgood, Ball, Williams, Shearer, Le Tissier, Bale and Lambert. We have been blessed with some great talent over the years. Matty was the great entertainer but Bally just made me purr with delight. What a leader and midfield general. I have enjoyed the cup runs, the promotions, the relegation battles, the derbies, the highs, the lows. Apart from the awful Dutch years always punching above our weight. I love this club.
