Conversely players who have done very little , such as Diallo and Salisu are reinvented as superstars. I'm convinced it's a self defence mechanism.

McCarthy, I really don't think his that bad despite his dip in form which coincided with the whole teams cataclysmic decent. When the whole team was playing well earlier in the season he was being spoken about being selected for England. Rotating cannot help confidence or performance.
