That's the crux for me too WS. The "drive and ambition" didn't really leave when Cortese left....it was actually impossible for that level of drive and ambition to ever be fulfilled in the first place....(in Cortese's timescales at least). I guess it all comes down to footballers not being the brightest breed in the world and hence being suckered in by Cortese's sales patter. I even started to believe some of it myself but always had my doubts...

Nice summary Phil. All this fits in with my long held hunch that we can trace the events of the last 9 months to Cortese voting against the FFP rules. I'm ever so slightly chuffed that one of my many slightly bonkers hunches has finally come true (possibly....)

I think people tend to criticise his self-congratulatory pat-on-the-back style of 'journalism' rather than his accuracy per se. He also blocks people for having the temerity to ask 'difficult' questions about his articles....
