Question for the Positive-Thinkers after the Walsall result
trousers replied to alpine_saint's topic in The Saints
I've been thinking the same for a while now. Being where Bournemouth have been for most of the season would, as a Saints fan, make me more nervous looking over our shoulder and thinking "we'll throw this away knowing Saints" than I am looking up from 5th place with a couple of games in hand. Given that Saints NEVER make life easy for their fans I'd rather be in the chasing pack and come in with a late run than in 2nd place trying to defend our position. As illogical as that sounds, that's where I'd rather be right now. -
Reverse psychology time..... Colchester 2 Saints 1

Hey, clear off - this is a thread for rocket scientists....FFS ;-) -
Question for the Positive-Thinkers after the Walsall result

To be able to answer your question I'd need some information about the nature of bournemouth's wins and losses. If you could provide a breakdown of their results indicating which scorelines matched the balance of play and which went against the balance of play I'll then be able to supply an answer. Cheers -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/walsall/9411826.stm While keeping his feet on the ground, Smith expressed his pride in the Saddlers' achievement at beating one of the favourites for promotion. "It's a fantastic result for the team and the football club. Yes, we had a charmed life at times, and maybe a little bit of luck was with us today, but there have certainly been games this season where we haven't had that.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/p/plymouth_argyle/9411804.stm Plymouth Argyle will be forced into administration, perhaps as early as Friday, unless the League One club receives an immediate cash injection. With no sign of the £5m needed to see the season out - and total debts of £10m - the board meets on Friday. The club's two Japanese-based directors have promised £1.4m from a new investor but BBC Sport understands that will be swallowed by overdue pay and taxes. And with Argyle due in court on Monday, administration looks almost certain.

http://www.cu-fc.com/page/News/0,,10424~2305617,00.html Big Game Awaits On Saturday Posted on: Tue 01 Mar 2011 The U's take on Southampton at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Saturday as John Ward's men continue their quest to close in on the play-off spots. With the Saints losing at Walsall and the U's picking up their first away win since October at Bristol Rovers, the gap between the two teams is now just four points. And the U's are also that number of points behind MK Dons, who come to the Weston Homes seven days later. Tickets for the game against Southampton are selling well and the biggest home crowd of the season is expected for the visit of Nigel Adkins' men.

Just looking at all the games this coming weekend and, statistically, we have the toughest game of those teams in contention at the top, i.e. we're away to the team in 7th whereas our closest rivals are either at home, or away to lower league sides. Bournemouth, Brighton, Charlton, Peterborough and Huddersfield should all be favourites to win their games I'd have thought. Crunch time.... Saturday, 5 March 2011 Bournemouth v Oldham, 15:00 Brighton v Carlisle, 15:00 Bristol Rovers v Dag & Red, 15:00 Charlton v Tranmere, 15:00 Colchester v Southampton, 15:00 Hartlepool v Brentford, 15:00 Leyton Orient v Notts County, 15:00 Peterborough v Exeter, 15:00 Rochdale v MK Dons, 15:00 Sheff Wed v Plymouth, 15:00 Swindon v Walsall, 15:00 Yeovil v Huddersfield, 15:00

The Walsall commentators singled out Barnard's behaviour saying that if he channelled all the energy he spent moaning at the referee into his game then he would be a better player. Perhaps the ref had had enough of Barnard's moaning by the end and didn't give him any benefit of the doubt, such as the free-kick shout you mention, as a way of saying: "you give me lip all game sonny Jim and I'll see that you don't get 50/50 decisions"? Perhaps the Walsall commentators made a valid observation that Barnard's rumbustious character can be counter-productive at times?

I switched to listening to the Walsall commentray when Solent packed up and their commentators said he played a blinder, and I quote: "His best game since joining us". I think the word we're looking for is: typical
-
But, do we know how many of the 11 (eleven) shots we had on target were "poor shots that were never going to go in" vs "superb shots that were only kept out by superb defensive action"? If Lambert, Barnard, et al, are putting the ball in the right spot and at the right pace then the result becomes largely out of our control. If the shots we had on target were poor, then fine, that's what probably differentiates this result from the Oldham away result. So, the $64,000 question: how many of last night's 11 shots on target were worthy of a goal? If the answer is "2 or above", then we were unfortunate. If the answer is "none" then we were poor.

Why wasn't the reaction after the Oldham away game the same as the reaction to this one? On t' radio, it sounded like a very similar type of game - number of chances, etc - the 'only' difference being that this time we were up against a team defending as if their lives depended on it rather than not giving a toss a la Oldham. Even the Walsall commentators were saying the only thing keeping them in the game was some miracle defending. Ollie Lancashire played his best game for them, for example (their verdict). Btw, the Walsall commentator also highlighted Barnard's attitude towards the end saying that if he had spent as much energy on his game as he did moaning at the referee then he might have been more productive....

I got the "badger's" bit towards the end there but stumped on the last two words. Any clues?

Gaffer - Got To Take Chances Posted on: Tue 01 Mar 2011 Nigel Adkins couldn't hide his frustration after seeing his team go down 1-0 at Walsall despite dominating the match. The manager saw Saints go down to a 68th minute strike against the run of play at the Banks's stadium, leaving him to ponder what might have been. "It was such a one sided game," he commented afterwards. "We have absolutely battered them, had chances, blocks on the line, goalkeeping saves but it's about winning games of football and you've got to take them. "They got one opportunity which was an ale house ball down the middle, it came off Radhi's head and the lad's gone though and taken it well to be fair to them. "It was one of those nights. The amount of opportunities we created, we looked powerful, strong, we passed the ball about and we created so many good opportunities and the ball wouldn't go in the back of the net." Countless opportunities from the visitors particularly in the second half seemed destined to produce at least one strike for his side, but it was scant consolation for the gaffer. "We created so many opportunities and were again a massive threat form set-plays. "We got the ball forward, there was no point tip-tapping about and there were so many opportunities it was untrue. "It was on the edge of you seat stuff but you've got to put the ball in the back of the net, it's as simple as that. "We've created enough opportunities to win several games for the whole month of March and that's what we've got to go again. We've got to pick ourselves up and go again. Not being funny but why have we got to March before this has happened? It's been a problem (on away match days) for months now. Sorry, in a bad mood (for some unknown reason...)
