Not in large numbers they didn't. £20k is only 1,300 fans paying £15. It is a nice gesture, but wasn't anywhere near a significant part of their fanbase.

It is a loan to get 1st team gametime, the alternative is him likely to play 0 league games for us this season. If he does well perhaps he'll get a second chance at Saints. I wouldn't completely write off his Saints future quite yet.
