I don't know the details, but at a guess any feuds/rivalries built up with another club could for example impact on your ability to do transfer/loan deals with them. Stephens played 41 games for Swindon last season, to go from that to 5th choice for Saints and rarely playing might not be good for his development. Might be better having a loan at a Championship club to test him more regularly now that he is used to playing every week.

Why does the alternative to playing Pelle have to be an identikit version of him? We can play with a different kind of striker or pair of strikers as an alternative. Last season without Pelle we used Mane and Long as a striker pairing away at Chelsea and it worked well. We now have Juanmi and Rodriguez as other options.
