You might automatically raise it in anticipation of a foul that does not materialise and this can happen many times in a game. Mané was touched and then flung himself to the ground but I don't believe that he was tripped. Some referees might have given a penalty but that doesn't make those who don't wrong or incompetent. Its definitely true that a player's reputation goes before him and it's been like that for as long as I have been following the game.

This is where 'opinion' comes into it. Could Francis have avoided that contact, or even tried to avoid it? Ayew was running normally and was tripped by the contact with Francis's shin. Did Ayew slow down, check his run, cut across at the last minute? Not easy to see on TV.

Ayew was tripped. You may have missed it. Ok, he ran across the front of the defender but his heel was caught by the defender's leg. I don't know what you expect the fourth official to do, he's 50 yards away.

Why didn't we score from the cross? is the more important question. If he was playing advantage he is supposed to indicate by using the proper gesture of both arms outstretched. He is also supposed to shout 'advantage' but few ever do.

Mason kept pointing to his watch whenever Butland dragged his heels a bit but they were only doing what any other team would have done. I was expecting five minutes, to be honest, what with all the substitutes and injuries.

I don't think the Chelsea ones were very convincing, but I was watching that on TV. Djuricic? I'd forgotten about him. The first chance he had when he tangled with Can I felt he was to busy trying to win a penalty when he should have carried on and tried to score. This may have influenced the ref's thinking when the second incident occurred. Let's not forget that most of us are fifty yards away.

I'm pretty sure that deliberate handball is a mandatory yellow. They make some offences mandatory in an attempt to stamp them out. Unfortunately some footballers are too stupid or selfish. As for the penalty claims, I can't say that any were very strong. It seemed to me that our players were looking for them instead of attempting to score.
