Forget your tedious attempts at playing Plato/Socrates, Theo would be a bad signing. Too high a wage for a bit-part player with a poor injury record, less pace than he once had (his main asset) and not good enough to start. He wouldn’t even be 3rd pick. I’d rather have a youngster learning the trade as our 4th choice and spend our very obviously limited resources elsewhere. Theo is a nice signing on a sentimental level and that’s it. We don’t have the money to be sentimental, and if it meant that much to him he should have made a different choice 2 years ago.

Vesti doesn’t have a long term future here, Bednarek will go next summer (Imho) and Stephens still lacks in pace and positioning so we might be looking for further cbs I guess?

I have us much confidence in us getting a midfielder in having known about it for months as I had last summer having months to sort out a defender. And in fairness we did get Danso.

I’d imagine the issue of signing players relates to the alleged takeover. Assuming there’s an agreed value, what happens to it if the business makes an expensive outlay or received a sudden cash boost?

So a couple of nobodies want a big loan to buy a club on the cheap with an extra “roughly $50million” additional to spend (Basically one decent player and some new furniture) as part of a vision to create a new Man City style empire, without the need for the main club to be remotely like Man City. Or we want an extra centre back to revert to a back 3 because we miss shipping 9 goals. From your 29 you’ve counted elyonoussi who is on loan to Celtic again this season, and Salisu who actually counts as under 21 (I didn’t realise he was quite that young either). With five keepers we’d reach 25 players just reducing that to 3, but I’d be surprised if any of Sims, Hesketh, Hoedt, Lemina or Carrillo we’re here come the end of the transfer window, and a bit surprised if Jones, McQueen (depending on injury), Boufal, Reed or Vesti were. Of course, the last 2, probably 3 would need replacing I assume but we should have plenty of space.

Marginally more embarrassing than suggesting Butland would be a good signing 😉

Thanks to olas’s excellent contract thread, I reckon we sit at 29 players that count as over 21 (or rather, not under 21 ... in case MLT is around). Of these, 1 is on loan for the season, and one until January giving us 27 currently. So we need to shift 2 to have the right number, more if we want to recruit more. Looking at some of those in the 27 (4 goalkeepers, hoedt, Lemina, Carrillo, reed, sims, Boufal, McQueen, Hesketh, Jones) I’d be amazed if we don’t shift more so don’t see it being an issue.

FWIW I think we’ll only buy if we sell Reed, which will depend on reed himself and if Ralph thinks he’s now good enough. I’ll happily accept Ralph’s judgement and in fairness will understand if Reed wants to go. Aside from possibly a boufal replacement in the squad (see smallbone more central longer term) which could be Telia anyway, I think we’re done for signings unless Reed goes and something moves in our goalkeeper situation. Possibly another centre back if we sell Vesti. Id love us to add Watkins but unless we get lucky on selling all our other dead wood (Hoedt, Lemina and Carrillo) We won’t be able to afford it imho

Is Alfie Jones capable of being 4th choice? Played all season (baring injury) at Gillingham, though as DM. I know he was highly regarded a couple of years back. I’d happily have additional quality all over the pitch but kind of think 3 established cbs with a younger 4th choice is enough for us?
