  1. Blimey I agree with soggy about something. Momentous day.
  2. Well I agree with your last paragraph. I think it's difficult as I don't like government interference in our lives either. I do think with the children you mention that in almost every case their poor behaviour is as a result of poor parenting or as a result of a mental health condition. In neither case should smacking be used for those scenarios, that's not to say that you can't still be firm and discipline children and I would consider myself to pretty knowledgeable on this subject.
  3. If people want to cry about historical events that didn't affect them then that's up to them. It's a modern thing to tack on modern morality to a situation that happened years ago and I find the whole thing really odd.
  4. How do we know that the parent always knows what is best for their children? What about parents who overfeed their children? Or overly protective parents who never let their children leave their sight? We don't just ignore those behaviours, we educate the parents about why that behaviour is going to have more of a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of their children than alternatives. One particular mother comes to mind who was raised in care and as a consequence did not possess the necessary skills to love her children properly without guidance. She certainly didn't know what was best for her child and whilst this is an extreme example, I could give you hundreds of times where parents clearly aren't doing the best things for their children.
  5. Unless a child has severe mental health problems, I don't believe there is a situation where a child is being a "c*nt no matter what you say or do." I have extensive childcare and behaviour management experience and I haven't encountered a situation that would require smacking as a corrective measure. I don't intend this to come accross as an insult, but it does seem like you don't have a ton of experience in that area which is why I said originally on this thread that education was a lot more important than punishment.
  6. I don't think there should be any corrective actions used against children that would cause them physical pain when there are other actions available that can achieve the same thing.
  7. Indeed. We also know that there are more effective parenting methods that correct or control behaviour that isn't the fear of pain or violence. If smacking were the only way to instill discipline, self control and correct behaviour then smacking would be more justifiable but it isn't.
  8. And I said as such above. I don't support legislation against smacking but I certainly don't condone it in this day and age when we know so much more about child development. Discussing how exactly to smack your child is just bizarre. There are so many effective methods of discipline that don't involve physical violence, how about we focus on those rather than if we should be smacking our children with open or closed palms?
  9. Erm no.
  10. I absolutely agree that those sort of people exist, I just don't think that the presence or absence of smacking has an effect on that. Helicopter parenting and never allowing children to be independent or ever fight their own battles leads to the sort of thing but I fail to see why smacking has to be a factor.
  11. But it's a bit of a leap to go from outlawing physical violence to outlawing any punishments entirely.
  12. Hmm I'm not sure about that. In my, extensive experience very frequently parents do not know what is best for their children. Out of interest, is it your own choice not to have children?
  13. I don't think anyone should be hitting children but I do think this should be looked at on a case by case basis when these incidents occur. It could for example be parents who have been taught that this behaviour is acceptable and so they may require education on the matter rather than immediate punishment. I have a lot of experience with loving parents doing what they think is best for their child but actually causing them harm in the process. As long as it is handled sensibly then I have no problem with a change in the law.
  14. Curtains
  15. If he loses a vote of no confidence shortly and then they call a quick general election then he will be fighting it absolutely no doubt about it.
  16. Can't agree with you there. I believe most polls are showing Boris has jumped in popularity in the last few weeks. It may be bad for Johnson if the opposition were in any way competent.
  17. It's probably beneficial for the Conservative party if he gets voted out and then fights an election rather than being forced to break his promise after the 31st.
  18. Tbf the lack of ambition shown by our owner or the lack of a unifying villain does make it much more difficult to generate an atmosphere.
  19. Nottingham forest away in our championship relegation season was the best away day I've ever been to. We were already relegated and we had a massive p*ss up and party all weekend. Legendary.
  20. And quite right too. Absolute disgrace to have another referendum and then throw the original votes in the bin.
  21. And if the numbers taking part in this second referendum are significantly lower because many have become disillusioned by those in power doing everything they can to overturn the original result?
  22. Having a sham of a second referendum amounts to ignoring the will of the people anyway. In fact it's actually more insulting because it's dressed up as being democratic when actually it's purely designed to overturn the original result.
  23. In a weird way I sort of agree with the lib dems who are at least honest about what they want. A charade of a second referendum is an idiotic idea and isn't going to heal any sort of divisions whatever way it goes. A half in non-brexit isn't going to please anyone either. The choices should be to leave properly with everything that entails or to cancel the whole thing. Both choices are difficult and will have real consequences.
  24. It's normally those who hsput the loudest about this sort of thing who are really hiding the real racism and regressive attitudes about other races. It's just one reason why they are so insufferable.
  25. Leave your rape and domestic abuse fixations for your personal life and keep them off the forum.
