As someone who suffered high altitude pulmonary oedema on a US skiing trip I would definitely recommend the first part of the holiday at lower altitude to acclimatise. We stayed at a 10000' resort for the 1st week and having spent a day at 13k I got hit. 2nd week at 8000' I recovered in about an hour.
