There's a huge blaze at the moment on the N York Moors just north of here (Scarborough). It's been going for a few days now and has the added bonus for the firefighters of unexploded ordnance left over from WW2 training going off occasionally. What is impressive to me is that local businesses have, without being asked, rallied round to help. Takeaways and restaurants have been sending food and drinks to the emergency service personnel and laundries have been taking in their clothing to clean. A local woman started a fund raiser which has raised £8K so far, which she's put into a kitty at the local garage to pay for diesel for the tractors which the farmers have been using to construct firebreaks etc. It would have been easy for people to just assume that this sort of thing is organised by the govt. but it's heartening that the community spirit is so strong here.

Oh, just remembered. I was on a work course in Bournemouth , we were sat in the bar when the barman said that Tom Jones and his band were staying overnight for a gig at the BIC the following day. Tour bus rolls up at midnight, loads of people got out; it was his band and backing singers but no TJ, they told us he was staying elsewhere with, ahem, 'a friend'. Stayed up most of the night getting pissed with them, they were mainly Americans and were a fantastic and funny group.
