I'm not arguing with you the manager is crap and should be getting more out of the squad..... however when this squad "used to get a lot more goals" was when we had the likes of Mane and Pelle and before that Lambert and a pre injury Jrod. One of the clubs biggest failing has been the mistake of thinking an injury prone Austin, Shane Long, and a post injury Jrod (or Gabbi) was a good enough strike force for the PL.
-
Yes he did but that's one great season more than he has managed at Man Utd...
-
Not with our strike force it would just be like having two blokes with erectile dysfunction at a threesome...
-
Annoying as it is I think that is just the way modern football has gone. Saints aren't any different. All club owners are hunting the money these days trying to get their bit of the pie football is ruled by money and hype these days.

Not true. The keeping of the manager and an illusion of stability and patience is important to the brand that Southampton FC want to promote world wide. It's all part of the narrative the club have been building the last few years. The important point is whether there is any point continuing with the "Brand" if it is going to damage us in the long term. We fans clearly don't think so the club clearly feel its a risk worth taking.
-
Yeah it is any easy thing for him to say after the event I still think it was an easy excuse for him. We will never know for sure but had NC stayed and spurs had come calling for poch I still think he would have gone not many people are going turn down spurs when they are at Southampton.

Cue Trousers...

Yes but it's two different arguments A) is can the manager set us up/play a different way to create more chances to score? The answer is clearly yes B) Would we score more if we had players that were better at converting the chances we do create? The answer is again yes It's not a one ir the other we have a manager combined with poor attacking players a perfect recipe for relegation ( doubly so when you add a pinch of under performing defence)
-
Shane long has missed hatful's of good chances over the last two seasons. Tadic, JWP, Gabbi, Hoj, Redmond and Boufal are all guilty of being wasteful in front of goal The one up front is an arguement about creating chances and could we create more and that's down to the manager. What isn't down to the manager is finishing the chances we do create (and despite the popular myth we do create chances) and that is down to poor players.
-
This is true but you can't get past the fact that some players are just naturally better than others. If saints had Kane up front this season we would be in a better position than now he is a natural goal scorer. If Spurs had Long (even one improved by poch) they would be in a worse position than they are now.

I believe that the summer Koeman left and Puel arrived was also the time that the news of the Chinese take over first broke. It seems to me that the prolonged take over and the desire for the new owner to maintain the status quo has to a degree rather than push on has caused the change in the clubs direction.
-
Whether you agree with it or not (and I'm sure plenty don't) he was never going to be the right fit for the way the club wanted to go. What Les wants, deep down, is a training ground coach with a love of youth players who improves the players and academy boys so they command big transfer fees. You are half right what he really wants is Poch MK2 Pellegrini was never going to be that so would never get hired any more than BFS or Pullis.
-
Chicken and egg. Do good strikers make good managers or do good managers make good strikers. You reckon spurs would have done as well as they have the last few seasons if their main striker was Shane Long? Poch wasn't able to make Gaston or Osvaldo decent players in the PL some players and managers just work.

Knives are harder to police than guns as they are an every day tool found in every kitchen in the Uk. We do have laws intended to stop the sale of knives to children and laws making it illegal to carry knives in public places but banning all forms of bladed tools would be rather problematic. The same could be said about the current trend for acid attacks the UK government acted to make it harder for children to buy but again its hard to tell people they can't buy household cleaning products.

The thread is about "Mistakes that cost us" so by definition it's going to be about past events and anything we talk about is going to be a subject that has been done to death... Having said that the biggest issue is recruitment we did well after the first mass exit and through the Koeman seasons but letting Pelle, Mane and Victor go all at once and then replacing them badly has cost us. The policy the club choose to pursue was basically reliant on getting the recruitment of replacements spot on as soon as that failed a down turn was inevitable. We now have a squad full of average players on good contracts.

I have a ST so yes I went to every home game last season bar a couple of cup games the end of last season was poor but then so our a lot of players in particular our attacking players..
-
The players AREN'T good enough!! the best ones keep leaving the ones that stay do so because they are very average.....
-
A lot better than the numpty we have now. His team are happily sitting in 8th with no fear of relegation despite being below us in the league when he took over.
-
Getting rid of Puel should have kept him cleared out the trouble makers in the squad and backed him with some better players and we would be safely mid table now.

I just read there have been 18 school shooting in the US this year I mean WTF it beggars belief. What does it take for the US to think that maybe the gun laws are fubar...

I think we can knock the its all Eric Black's fault conspiracy theory firmly on the head now....

Sorry turks I don't won't woman banned this is about my match day experience so I really want attractive, topless, Oktoberfest waitresses giving out free steins of beer on the brand new SMS terraces and perhaps a Dallas Cowboys style cheerleader squad for the half time entertainment All so if we ban the big lads along with women you've wiped out half the song repertoire of both home and away fans... -
