  1. It wasn’t just a team, that shirt spanned a few sides as the club evolved after 1976 under Lawrie. 1976 - the post cup-winning side (Channon, Osgood, … then signing Ted MacDougall, Alan Ball), Cup winners cup.. 1977/8 - the promotion year, Ted, Boyer, Nichol, Funnell, 1978/9 - back in Division One, Ball, League Cup Final, Golac 1979/80 - Channon returns, Boyer goal spree (at The Dell). always preferred what came next with the Keegan shirt, but the Admiral stripes certainly brings back memories of a good time to be a Saints fan.
  2. I think it was that season I saw Grimsby at Goodison Park. Long story, but was on a work course up there, one of the blokes was an Everton fan and persuaded some of us to go. I was interested in seeing Nicholl play for you so went along. But I hated Everton with a passion after the previous season’s FA Cup semi final (still do for that matter) so was quietly delighted when Paul Wilkinson scored in the last minute. just had to keep the smug glow of satisfaction and amusement away from the surface amongst the Everton support.
  3. Kevin Moore was very good for us. You forgot that our manager who signed him at the time was Chris Nichol who played with him whilst Asst Manager at Grimsby. And don’t forget Lawrie of course ( who signed Lew Chatterley and Ian Turner from you).
  4. When did you hear this rumour ? If you'd have written that on Friday then most would have been delighted, and speculated that AMN, Bednarek, and possibly Aribo would have been among those cast out. Two of them featured on Saturday though. Would be a shame if Orsic and DCC are two of the outcasts as I think they've got something to offer. Do you really go from WC semi-finalist for a decent side to not making our matchday squad ? However if attitude is the issue then RS is spot on.
  5. Serious note: yes, very commendable and have to acknowledge him for that. Not so serious though: could we lend him to the rescue mission in Turkey for the rest of the season ?
  6. My big fear as well (along with some of our players ability to self destruct). Would come as no surprise if Leeds throw some money at a big name replacement even on a temporary contract. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, at least not until after we’ve played them. Half expect West Ham to replace Moyes as well this week, depending on today’s result perhaps.
  7. Is DCC helping him to struggle settling at the moment ? Or his continued absence purely coincidental?
  8. Where is Mislav Orsic ? might be a better topic to write in at the moment.
  9. Hadn’t heard about this before. Perhaps it was at the end of the season and we just needed someone to hoover up the white lines around the pitches.

Also incredible how they emerge from whatever location or outpost we sign a player from. All with a remarkable command of English as well. I was expecting one from the Welsh Valleys in November, calling himself Pontypandy Saint or similar. Didn’t happen he must have been on holiday without internet access.
  11. I don’t think there is hostility towards him, just towards the fuckwits who have got us into the position of a third manager of the season.
  12. Many wanted Terry Paine to succeed Ted Bates, he was the logical choice. Especially in some of the pubs at the time. Unfortunately many of those championing ‘Painer’ will have passed on. But perhaps Terry can now get the role that many considered rightfully his. Forty-nine years later the Club should give him a call.
  13. The inevitable for me - unless Selles performs minor miracles over the next few weeks - is a parting of the way between him and the club. If we go down, as seems likely, I doubt Selles will remain in charge. Having been No 1 for a few weeks he probably won’t want the ‘demotion’ of going back to being a coach again, and the new bloke probably won’t want him lingering in the background. Ankersen will have helped bollocks up two blokes careers, Jones and Selles. Wonder whose spreadsheet that will register on.
  14. Why the recent fascination for Beattie coming back in some role ? Seems his pitchside performance at SMS the other week has sparked the interest. Perhaps Kenzie should be part of the coaching team as well. Or maybe bring Pahars back.
  15. Yeh, f’sure … Shame the squad is down to the bare bones. No it isn’t ‘Arry, it’s been that shit most of the season.
  16. Was he flying back from Southampton then ?
  17. You’d have thought that had been discussed before he checked in to the hotel last night.
  18. I expect you’re right given how they’ve conducted other matters. But in fairness to the club, who’s to say JM didn’t move the goalposts this morning. Having slept on it, his agent, knowing our plight, could have suddenly dropped the bombshell that they’ve reconsidered, and although happy with the terms (£££) he thinks his client would be better suited to a 3.5 year contract rather than the 6 months on offer. “If we can just address that minor detail we’re good to go … , and the press are waiting…”. Seems a little strange - or even more inept - if we’ve leaked snippets to our local journalists before this fell apart. Or perhaps, again, like Gakpo, Semmens, Ankersen and co should keep their traps shut the night before a deal is meant to fall into place.

Exactly the same was said about Gray and then Wigley. Being popular as a coach isn’t necessarily indication of becoming a good head coach or manager. I also remember reading he’d been the defensive coach at his previous club.
  20. He’d cause a few sparks to fly, and a few fits of outrage from the woke brigade.
  21. Selles gets my vote out of those three.
  22. Possibly had implications for his severance from Leeds, which he wanted compensation for one way or another. Doubt it was as simple as we are lead to believe in the media snippets.
  23. Don’t think it’ll be Lampard. And Gerrard wouldn’t be interested in a short term deal. If it’s Rooney then my days follow g Saints will be numbered. If not over.
  24. I’m in Cardiff tomorrow. If I get chance I’ll drive up around the valleys and see if any PE teachers fancy a change of career.
  25. So unless he proves a miracle worker, the likelihood is that Saints will recruit a manager in the summer. At that point, Selles probably won’t want to go back to his assistant role, and the new bloke will want to bring his own staff in. Selles will probably leave, despite whatever ‘potential’ he had when we brought him in. Nice one Rasmus.
