Something for the older supporters or those who like delving into the past, but on 5/12/60 quite an memorable match took place at The Dell. Saints v Leeds in the then fairly new League Cup. It went into folklore and history books for a couple of reasons: Due to floodlight failure it took 2 hrs 40 minutes to complete (this was the longest time to complete a single "90 minute match" for some years, not sure if this still stands). Also Derek Reeves scored all five Saints goals - a record for a League Cup match that stood until 1989. This is contained on the Wikipedia page for Derek Reeves: Interesting about the no subs, and also that not being able to hold on to a commanding lead is nothing new. This predates my time following Saints by a few years but recall older family talking about this match. Any of the older Saints fans remember it, or there that night ?

What's that got to do with it ? Give him an increase to £90,000/week for good measure. It's in the manual Les left.

Please with this news, hopefully he'll keep improving and remain with us but if he feels he's outgrown us then at the very least it'll enable a decent fee rather than doing a Hojberg on us.

Cheese (or at least one brand). https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/jul/24/australias-coon-cheese-to-change-name-in-effort-to-help-eliminate-racism

Except players of a similar profile such as Axel Disai (who we were linked with and ended up at Monaco) and Sven Botman (who someone on here mentioned and went to Lille) were available for a similar sum to Salisu and as far as I'm aware are all featuring at their clubs. Hope this signing turns out well but the longer it goes on the more possible that the club have made a cock up or not done all the homework they might have done.
-
Certainly underlines the good judgement in not bringing him back here with his injuries.
-
This just doesn't ring true... Can you seriously have those two names in the same sentence... For whatever reason... how about because it's completely fanciful,a load of bollocks... and was never going to happen in the first place. Is that good enough reason ? Can't believe any fuckwit of a local journalist would put his name to this.

Might be seen as indecent exposure. Agree with your appraisal.

Not at all. But the club was established in 1885 not 1974. As I said in an earlier post I'm never been a great fan of the badge but given the possible modern mess we might end up with it might as well leave it as it is as it (doubt we'd end up with a 'classical' design if redesigned).
-
Ruined by the ball and scarf, as someone commented above this really dates it to the 1970's.

Disregard that have just seen both Ruddock and Cork have a sinle cap. Widening this to all four home nations always though Eric Martin was unlucky not to get a Scotland cap when he really hit form one season.
-
Good choice, a fantastic player in his time with us. Was called up to the squad at one point but don't think he played. Neil Ruddock - similar I think, only a squad selection From recent times - Jack Cork

I like the idea but a major influence in the club's dedision making is that they'd never own the full copyright to the city crest as they would to a bespoke design. I'm not sure the minor tweaks/additions would satisfy the club that it wasn't easy to pass off on merchandise. A crest I found intersting was on a the Church hall or building near St Mary's at the time the stadium was built, it combined the city crest with the St Mary's crest which from recollection was crossed keys. That would have been a suitable change at the time we were moving back to the area (although probably still subject to a copyright consideration). The building though is no longer there and I've been unable to trace this on the internet since.

Saints FC Podcast - Ep 99 - Ultimate XI With the Mick Channon
Badger replied to twoandahalfstuds's topic in The Saints
That was good listen. Thanks for posting. A great bit of Saints history, and nostalgia although a couple of selections are before my time following Saints. Some interesting selections, won't spoil it and post his line up. Leave it for you to listen. -
Was the 'Ted Bates statue' of badges wasn't it ?

I've never been a fan of the badge as with all the various elements it appears too cluttered. Up until a couple of seasons ago I'd have welcomed a change. This type of thread has run a few times before and on one occasion I think a poster under the name of Gecko gave some excellent alternative options. However I've come to realise that any change is likely to be a modern abortion of a design so would rather it be left alone. The suggested design here is perhaps a prime example of why it should remain.
-
I'm sure we are, but Wiiliams was a loan as I recall. I don't see us spending the kind of £ that Genk are likely to want for Maehle to be an "option" or cover. From the little I've seen I'd be pleased to see him here. I'd have preferred him or Zeefuik in the summer ahead of KWP though I'm not sure he would displace KWP at the moment. To be fair KWP hasn't looked out of place this season (opening two games aside in which the whole team were poor),and has been been a pretty consistent performer, better than I expected.
-
Can't see that happening now. I think KWP has taken that role.
-
Agreed. Can't believe anyone would think otherwise when the most likely alternatives are Shane Long, or Obafemi. Long can be a useful sub but don't think he should be a starter for us.
-
Shame it's disappeared, was good.

Great result and although our spell at the top may only be for hours it's great testimony to Ralph's working and players some of whom have reached extra heights or perhaps are playing above themselves. Long may it continue. This is a new experience for an entire generation of Saints fans, enjoy it whilst you can. Strangely it doesn't feel as momentous to me as when I saw us go top for the first time in our history (1982 at Ayresome Park) but we then had Keegan, Channon and Ball playing for us so there was a feeling that it was 'natural' for us to reach that height. The current squad aren't in the same illustrious band as that team so going top this time feels more' 'deserved' as it's been done through hard work, effort and following Ralph's tactics and style.
-
We hope he is, but how often have we seen these return dates becoming movable feasts, (making progress, light training, not quite match fit yet, after Christmas.. after the next international break... and before we know it "we hope to see him again before the end of the season" ..) ?
-
With news of Ings injury and operation perhaps the focus will change again ...
-
Great shame but if it's 4-6 weeks then so be it, Theo can grasp the opportunity to earn a new contract. Think I read - may have been on here - his most prolific time with Arsenal was playing as more of a striker than being stuck out on the wing ? Just hope the injury isn't one of those rolling injuries where 4-6 weeks becomes 4-6 months. Saints have got a bit of a record for underplaying injuries, Salisu for one.

Thought Chivers left c 1968.
