  7. Phil Boyer was indeed an unsung hero for much of his career,as he spent it in the shadow of Ted McDougall's goalscoring at Bournemouth and Norwich before they arrived at Saints. In 1979/80 though he was unstoppable at home, although didn't score away until January. Great potential forward line of him and KK was expected, but it never materialised,as Channon and even a rejuvenated Charlie George for a few weeks seemed to keep him out of the side.
  8. That is certainly the best team goal I've seen. What a great team that season, every time I watch that goal something new amazes me, notice Armstrong's contribution.Firstly taking the ball in front of his own defence, then appearing in their penalty area for the header back to KK. (Best individual goal is probably MLT's first v Newcastle 1994/5 in my view).

  10. Going back a bit further,in the mid to late 70's I think Solent used to begin and end its summary with the theme from the 1960's childrens TV series The Freewheelers. I was living out of area but from an upstairs bedroom, weather permitting I could pick up a very weak signal on Radio Solent to listen to the Saints pre match news, and updates two or so times a half.It might not have been great coverage but it was welcome.
  11. Simple fact is that since he left Saints, he has captained two promotion winning teams.
  12. No coincidence either that both Souness and Hoddle wanted to show Benali the door, yet Dave Jones whilst in a cash strapped club kept him.

    How about...

Oh by the way, I heard some - virtual - racist or homophobic chanting at a linesman from those not attending today. How disgraceful.

What about a 'Just not back from the match' thread ? or a 'Just back from the not a match' thread ?
  15. We could not give Benali away, the fact is when he was on a free there were no takers. Yet many wish to see him in the same light as MLT who could have chosen a club to play for. Oakley contributed more to the team - guile and passing ability - when he played than Benali. I do agree with above comment from someone above, that like Schneidrlin now, you always felt Oakley could have sometimes raised his game to another level.
  16. Yes indeed, what has he ever done for us ? That FA Cup ,signing the most sought after player in Europe at the time, and playing great one touch passing football really does represent a dark time in our history. Branfoot, Gray and Wigley just don't get the credit they deserve do they ?

  20. I thought it probably originated with Chelsea. No doubt sung after they got board with "One man went to mow..".

  22. You're not Stuart Hall's scriptwriter for his match reports by any chance are you ?
  23. I remember he missed one at home vWolves c1979, the first he missed for us*.It was unthinkable that he might miss,or it might be saved, he was Mr Reliable in the same way that MLT and Lambert have become. *Remembered almost as well as the first he scored for us vPalace in the semi-final.
  24. The anniversary shirt aside, any other official events seem to have been decidedly low key.Sorry to ask, but what were the official events ? I have clearly missed them although possibly because of being exiled. As for ex players on the pitch, I assume your referring to the 1976 players at the Man U cup tie. In itself, very good but it seemed rather petty that the manager who masterminded it was not present. Despite being unofficial and late, this weekends events have clearly caught the attention of the fans and struck a chord. Any chance that NC is envious of the success ? I like NC, and his management but feel he is out of line here in not openly acknowledging our previous success and those that brought it here. Having lived through the Lawrie Mac era,I can not subscribe to the bitterness many are spouting towards him. When NC has delivered promotion(s),an FA Cup, regular european football, and signed the current European Player of the Year, he too will be as popular as Lawrie. Finally, I wonder if Markus might have been more gracious about the 'unofficial' event etc.
