Starting our second season down last time without a disinterested ‘Arry on a deliberate collision course with the Chairman and Director of Sport (or whatever title SCW had) might also go some way to explaining why we did better by comparison. As for your nightmare scenario next season don’t forget we might also have the biggest football club known to (Neanderthal) Man , Portsmyth, in our division. Not many Championship clubs claim to have 50,000 locked out every week.

"Dirty northern bastards" might not be appropriate either, although they are of course north of Southampton.

and 5-4 in an epic League Cup match in December 1960. Derek Reeves scored all five which remained a record for about thirty years, and because of power cuts the match took over three hours to complete.

Will they be calling us 'scummers' ?

Yes, good point. Think it was KK, Alan Ball, Mick Channon, Mick Mills, and Peter Shilton. The trick question I think used to be about them playing in the same Saints team, which was a myth as Mills and Shilton joined after KK left. Just a thought, but presume Dave Watson didn't captain England at any stage.

Barbican... it's great, man ! Sorry Lawrie, got that wrong, although I'd have said the same for the fee I expect. Have often thought about how sickly and shit Barbican was when now drinking an alcohol free beer (or Guinness - now that is progress).

Agree. Signing the European Player of the Year/England captain, something we'll never see again. Lawrie certainly gave us our finest years, great shame we couldn't get a trophy between 1980-84 with the players we had in that era and style of football we played.

Don’t forget that under the rules of ‘burden of proof’ the onus is on you to prove your statements. -

I think the orange text was B.Rabbit. -
I always thought promotion was clinched with a 1-1 draw away to Orient (Terry Paine scoring).

Occurred to me on Saturday, Saints get a late winner at Millwall and we’re all elated in our competitive league where we can win matches. Bournemouth lose 6-1 at Man City. No great surprise just a routine tonking for a lower table club v one of the top three. That is the league we’re trying to get back to, earn the right to get stuffed by City etc. Of course had Millwall scored first rather than hit the bar, we wouldn’t have been so keen on our league. Thin margins and all that.

Glenn Hoddle obviously out of fashion. -
Surely the greatestest of cup giant killings and upsets of all time ?

“Developmentally delayed”. Really ? Can think of several other words in ‘old money’.

Let’s start by clawing back some points on Leeds first. Don’t want to see another team putting too much daylight between us.
-
Surprised they didn't do one of these after, Brentford, or Forest. Better still after Wolves and why tactically it is so difficult to play against 10 men.

Wonder if Jason Wilcox has got his marmalade sandwiches in that coat pocket.

Big step up from the level today to the full pelt Championship (even at the pace we sometimes play). Think WBA might be the more realistic target.
-
Flaw in that plan is you might need to provide ID for collection. ( We had to at Hull for instance).

Agree, I think he'll do well there.
