There you go, the first goal is a prime example of what we’re discussing. Taken in isolation, it’s not a glaring error. BUT, when the original cross comes in , there is nobody around the centre half who is just outside the 6 yard box. He makes a shite headed clearance, which leads to a long range shot. I’d expect a decent keeper to do one of 3 things there. Ideally come and claim the cross, aggressively & early. Secondly he tells the centre half to leave it and it drifts out of play, or towards the full back who was also unopposed. Or thirdly he shouts early and aggressively so the centre half heads it out for a corner. No, yet again Baz’s organisation, aggression, and positioning skills are non existent. A decent keeper reads that, there’s nobody fucking near where the cross is headed away. It’s keepers ball if he’s proactive and reading the game, he claims it. Still at least he’s not a knob head.

I’m genuinely intrigued who this keeper is that you’re criticising for being vocal. The nearest to Martinelli I can see is Martínez, but surely you can’t mean him. The bloke who made a world class save in the dying seconds of a World Cup final, who saved 2 penalties in the quarter final, one in the final and won the golden gloves? You’re criticising him for not finishing in the top 6, as if that somehow means Baz’s silence is a good thing. Unrealistic? If expecting the keeper to make important saves at important moments during a game is unrealistic, then I must be. Nobody has said he was responsible for the scoreline that’s just a straw man (or straw hands) argument. What people are saying is he’s not good enough and unless he shows significant improvement he will cost us points & he won’t win us any. Saturday was proof of what some of us have been saying for months. He’s fucking pony, he lets too many goals in & doesn’t make anything other than routine saves. Whether we’re stuck with him or not, that is the case. There really isn’t a debate about his capabilities, he’s bang average at best. I think we could and should do better.

Don’t be daft. A decent keeper saves the 3rd & the 5th. That 3rd goal just before half-time killed us stone dead. It changed the course of the second half. Minutes before half time, the talk was all about how important it was for Sunderland to go in with a 2 goal advantage, that they had struggled to hold onto leads & 2-0 is a nervous score line. All of a sudden Baz Ball made it irrelevant & pretty much killed the game. It’s beyond belief that anybody rates this bloke. He clearly wasn’t good enough last year, and doesn’t look anything other than bang average this.

I’m pleasantly surprised how many points we’ve got so far, and on paper the transfer window looked ok (although I’d have liked a couple of pirates in). However, there are worrying things about the first month. Firstly he seems wedded to Baz in nets, & secondly he doesn’t seem to be able to organise us defensively, it’s also slightly worrying that the most coherent & effective we’ve looked was in the first half of the first game. I guess it’s the uncertainty since that’s had an effect and we can now move forward. I imagine he knows it’s shit or bust so maybe that might encourage him to be a bit more pragmatic. Promotion is the be all and end all, I couldn’t really care less how it’s achieved, but I wish we’d get it in the mixer a bit more.

Most keepers do 3 things. 1. Make really good saves 2. Make saves they should make. 3. Make errors. He only does the last 2. Any shot or header anywhere near the corner or struck decently is a goal. You can analyse the goals he’s conceded all you want, but a championship keeper should be saving some of the ones he lets in that aren’t outright howlers. He doesn’t save anything a third of fourth tier keeper wouldn’t save. Fucking hell, he’s either the unluckiest keeper in the world, every shot on target is unsaveable or he’s fucking pony.
