I have no idea how reliable the data is and have no real desire to go and check it all, having only looked at it as part of a study of South African society with one of my English classes. However, with approximately a 2.5% infection rate within that age group according to 2008 stats, I would question whether that means that at least one in eight should have been infected. Even within a higher risk group, the odds are still heavily against infection in every case. I have no actual knowledge within the area though and wouldn't claim to be well informed at all.

The figures in Africa, especially South Africa, the figures are still pretty scary. Of women in the age group around 30, I think it's around 30% that have the virus. Yes, confirmed here. Over 10% of all South Africans have HIV or AIDS, up to around one in three for women aged 25-35: http://www.avert.org/south-africa-hiv-aids-statistics.htm Clearly still a huge problem in many areas, not sure of the stats for the UK.

No, but not playing as well over the last few matches does. Would you say we're seeing the same form from Tadic in the last three as we saw in the earlier games? If the answer is yes, you've seen something I haven't seen, if the answer's no, well, that's a lapse in form isn't it?
-
Or a bit of both? Tadic, Pelle and Mane. Very good players going through a minor lapse in form or average players coming off a burst of great form?

Think I missed this one. I'll try to avoid going for classics from before my era and pick out the ones that were of my time and meant something to me. Giant Steps - The Boo Radleys The Stone Roses Hatful of Hollow - The Smiths Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys The Bends -Radiohead I know Hatful of Hollow is strictly a compilation, so probably shouldn't be allowed, but it was the only Smiths record I had at the time and completely changed music for me. Giant Steps is in my opinion the greatest album ever made, but is largely an unknown classic. The band then went on to accidentally have a throwaway pop hit, which strangely enough caused them to implode. Giant Steps is a real journey of an album though and was completely out of nowhere. stone Roses and Arctic Monkeys were big enough to speak for themselves, just albums full of incredible songwriting. I preferred The Bends to the more commonly lauded OK Computer, because for me, that was where they started to disappear up their own arses, rather than just make great songs.

That was probably partly from the whisky too, Bear. RIP, sad news. Must be awful for his wife and family, but also of course the guy who bowled to him. I wonder if he'll ever be able to bring himself to pitch it short again.

I earn comfortably above the average wage and my wife earns twice what I earn, but both of us currently drive fairly old toyotas, a Yaris and and a Corolla estate. There are few purchases that will depreciate in value as quickly as a car, so unless you need a car that looks good for your work, in which case you probably get a company car, I don't see the point. Pretty much everyone else who lives in my road drives a BMW or an Audi, but ours are as big as we need and rate highly for safety, economy and reliability. We own some forest and a couple of holiday homes off the beaten track, so maybe one day we'll get a four wheel drive, but at the moment I'd prefer our money went on paying off the mortgage, which is a far smarter investment. We bought both our cars without borrowing, it's always best to avoid debt, especially for something like a car which loses value so fast. Everyone has different priorities though.

This one is similar, but a real challenge, top 5 scorers every year since 1992. http://www.sporcle.com/games/NahuOost/southampton-top-5-scorers-since-199293

Clear case of PC gone mad. Can't say anything without risking offending someone, etc.
-
Funny and unexpected to see UKIP becoming the new PC brigade.

We seem to hear loads about left wing types getting a bit precious and easily offended by possibly harmless things, but this one seems to be the other way: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30139832 A picture of a house with no comment added at all and she's lambasted and pushed into resignation? Has she? Where was that then? All that from the words: Why isn't this "PC gone mad"? You can't post a photo of a house without it offending someone? Are UKIP and their followers now turning into the over sensitive PC brigade?

http://www.romseyconservatory.com/ These are absolutely superb. They've been national installers of the year a couple of times, certainly the best in the area.

Just looking through my bank account
norwaysaint replied to Barry Sanchez's topic in The Muppet Show
Wow, so pretty much the day he was unbanned he was back on here posting and starting threads, almost like he's been poised and waiting for a chance to return this last year. That is one heavy duty dependency. The bloke needs to get something else in his life, it's been a ****ing year! Imagine your life revolving around message boards that much. No wonder he had so little real world knowledge. -
It is nice that being good for saints now means you have a good chance of an international call up. When we were last doing well, there was never any real talk of call ups for Oakley, Marsden, erm...Ormerod? Dodd never got close to the full squad. Delap only got a few caps, Beattie was very lucky to get a cap before he left. nowadays we're all a bit annoyed if one of our regulars doesn't get a call up, shows that we consider this to be among the best saints teams ever put together.

Hasn't fire walking been shown to be harmless as long as you do it at the right speed? Why is it still a thing people bother with? It's not mind over matter at all, it's just believing in the physics.
-
He's been a good striker at a time when England have lacked great strikers. It's a bit odd that he will probably end up being England's leading goalscorer, when he's never really been that good for England.

Why does this season feel so different to last?
norwaysaint replied to norwaysaint's topic in The Saints
no, that's exactly the same. reading through, the main difference does indeed seem to be other teams performances rather than our own, mixed with relief after the fear of being relegation fodder. Our form on the pitch isn't much different. Also people seem to think we can handle a couple more injuries than we could last year. It's interesting that Tadic and Pelle weren't really clicking last time out. Their partnership has been key. Given their past achievements, you imagine they'll click again soon. -
Right now we're second. Last year we were third, so not much different. We've got 25 points, 22 last season, so we're only one win better off. We've only conceded 5 goals, the best in the PL, absolutely identical to last year. We're being praised across the media for our style and approach, exactly like we were last year (high pressing game and young home grown talent) We've got an exciting new manager with interesting ideas, just like last season Tadic, Pelle and Long are proving a handful up front for opposition teams, Lambert, Lallana and JRod all did so well last season they got their first call ups and we were (allegedly) offered over the odds money for each. We've only lost two matches, last season we'd only lost one, and won one of the fixtures we lost this season against a big club. Our success this season seems to almost exactly mirror last season on paper, yet for many it's felt far better. The most obvious difference this season has been that Liverpool, Spurs and a few others have had some terrible results and are a long way adrift of where you'd expect them to be. Is that the main thing then? How the other teams are playing? Or is there no real difference and we'll fall away to an impressive, but lower place in the same way? Or do you see us as being far better on the pitch this season? We have scored a few more goals, which, statistically is the main improvement. Is our depth that much better?

Don't understand this thread. There have been so many threads here with links to positive pieces about saints, that I've actually stopped clicking on them now because I've got bored with all of the repetitive articles on how we're doing everything right and that we are the model for other clubs to follow. We've become very popular with neutral fans too, so there's far more interest in us than I can remember in many years. As far as pundits go, there always seems to be at least one on the panel that thinks we have a great chance of making it into Europe.
-
I mean exactly what I said. At this time last year, we were on nearly the same points as we are now. We finished eighth once all matches were played. Do you disagree with anything I've actually said?
-
You have to take into account that we've got a similar amount of points now to what we had last season at this stage and that was only good enough to finish 8th once the whole season had played out.
-
Looking back over the past few seasons, we'd need at least low seventies, probably mid seventies, although it may be lower this season if the challenging clubs keep dropping points. Across a whole season though, you'd imagine a few of those clubs have the depth to pick up points more consistently than us once our form wobbles and our currently high morale takes a knock. 65 seems very optimistic for fourth though.
-
JRod's main threat was always his quick acceleration into the box, usually on the end of a pass from Lambert or Lallana, beating the last man. His closest equivalent now is probably Mane. I think JRod, if he retains his acceleration after the injury, would work very well together with Pelle and Tadic. What we don't have is a like for like back up for Pelle. A reliable and strong bloke who can be counted on to hit the target when the ball lands at his feet or on his head in the area, but what club does have two players like that of his quality? We've only ever really had one at a time in recent years, Beattie, Rasiak, John, Lambert, etc.
-
Go and sit on the bench at a big club, that'd prove to Hodgson that he's England material. It's amazing that after such a lacklustre world cup, Hodgson actually has the (lack of) nerve to name a squad with so many players who haven't proved themselves this season.
