  1. I am struggling to find any link between this and political correctness.
  2. I am frankly appalled at the idea of people living and working in other countries.
  3. Yeah, Norway's probably the most successful Olympic nation because they dominate the Winter Olympics. People like Bjørndalen, Aamodt (the most successful downhill skier ever), Dæhlie (most successful winter Olympian ever) stand out, but they always have a strong team and are gutted if they aren't among the medals. It's a really high expectation for a population of 4 and a half million. It's like a religion over here. Everybody skis either downhill or cross-country, but they are quite fitness-orientated generally. I work at a sixth form and at least 90% of my students belong to a sports team and work out at a gym regularly. They would nearly all take for granted that they will go to the mountains for skiing in winter and at Easter and most have a family cabin in the mountains.
  4. Jamaica apparently, all the sprinters I suppose, Britain rated above Germany and the US though, but sadly below France. http://www.greatestsportingnation.com/stats/global-cup-per-capita/2011
  5. I though this sounded an odd thing to say, so I went to find the thread and quote you're referring to. For some reason you seem to be being quite dishonest about what he said. He didn't mention over forties at all, you just made that up. He doesn't even say people in that age group are more common than any others. He just says that they are frequently there. That could be a jury with one person in their twenties and the rest over forty happening several times. If you believe in yourself in an argument, you should just stick to the facts.
  6. I think it would be a mistake to try too hard to bring in players in January, as long as we sign Jos. Would we want to replace jos or Fonte, who we are generally happy with, or are we looking for somebody of the calibre that would suit sitting on the bench in the championship? That's not great preparation for building a team fit for the prem. Martin is good cover for this league and eventually there will be Seaborne, plus whoever is up and coming. The same up front. Do we want to replace Rickie, Guly, Connolly and Barnard? Or do we want a new striker who would be happy on the bench? We could probably replace one of them if we got somebody really good, but Maynard and Rodrigues? Are they really worth bringing in just before we get promoted? As a promoted team wouldn't we attract better than that? I think it would be a mistake to fill the squad with Championship level back-up players and then find ourselves with too many squad members just when we can attract better from home and abroad again. The squad's good and we've hardly been stretched have we? The only players worth bringing in now would have to be Premier league quality, not players just in case somebody gets injured, we should try to cover that with loan players who might play their hearts out, hoping to be signed properly when we get promoted.
  7. Hmm, my wife is a scientist and from what she's told me, there's a lot of bad or stupid practice going on there too. For example, researchers in influenza vaccines (her field) are currently celebrating manipulating bird flu and mutating it so that ferrets can catch it from each other. This is seen as a great breakthrough because ferrets are the "gold standard" in testing as they are far closer to humans genetically than the other test animals that can be used, so they can have more efficient tests. The main fear with bird and swine flu has always been the chance that it could mutate into a form that we can catch from each other. So they've actually helped it on a step of that journey as part of their research. Brilliant. She's getting out of that field.
  8. We've probably all been taken in by the first two here, but did anyone seriously ever believe the last two? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15619393
  9. Haven't seen anything about it in the paper here and he's from these parts.
  10. They've had a tough time lately, hope this appointment works well for them and they manage to turn things around.
  11. I hated Glasgow and enjoyed Edinburgh. I wasn't in Glasgow for long though, although I did witness a protestant march through the city, which was preceded by chavs in Rangers tops banging on all the windows as they ran down the street. Edinburgh's a tourist town though, while Glasgow's just another big city.
  12. I also think it's out of order to pick on Dune just because he's unemployed and on benefits. It can happen to anybody and I hope he can get back on his feet and off the handouts soon. Chin up, Dune and good luck.
  13. Thatcher should never be forgiven for overseeing the privatisation of North Sea Oil. Countries that held onto state ownership of their oil got rich. The Tories made a fast buck out of it to fund one wealthy decade, then the golden goose was gone and Britain has become poorer while countries like Norway became amongst the richest in the world. She gets away with murder that this isn't mentioned more.

  16. Absolutely what I was thinking reading this thread. It shows the worst side of the internet. A lot of people making very unpleasant insinuations and suggestions without even a hint of anything to back them up, just rumour and "a friend of a friend" stories. The more this sort of crap goes on, the more people start to refer to it as "well-known" and so it becomes assumed that it's true. Not one single event has been referred to here, just vague rumours. Even the original post for that transcript said it was a spoof, but it's a stupid unpleasant spoof and a quick search shows how much damage it's already doing as it's being used by people as pathetic as posters on here as evidence.
  17. To be fair, it is a very hard name to spell.

  19. Somebody in one of my classes over here was insisting it was going to be in Nottingham in England. I thought they were taking the ****. Is there some sort of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor theme? I suppose if they're not doing London, they need a place with international recognition like Liverpool or Nottingham.
  20. I use satellite and get access to all BBC shows, I don't pay anything, but would if it became necessary. When I lived in Britain I always paid the license fee happily even when living in situations where I probably could have escaped it. The channels they sell, like BBC prime are hopeless and full of repeats. But if you're within range of the satellite you can just use a British box.
  21. Anyone who complains about the BBC has clearly not lived abroad. There is nothing to compare to it and it is looked up to around the world. Living abroad I use the BBC for news, sport and also in my job I regularly use BBC resources which are usually of a far higher standard than all of the alternatives. I listen to a lot of podcasts too and many of the best of those come from the BBC. ITV is generally ****ing awful and I would hate that to be the benchmark. Of course it's got its faults, but there's none better and it would be a huge loss.
  22. Back to yet more of the petty sniping. Didn't take long.

  24. This was the first chance I've had to actually watch saints (on TV) this season. I've heard so much about how good we are now that it was a real anticlimax. We were certainly not better than them today. Chaplow was everywhere, even right at the end of the 90 minutes, Davis was superb. I see Guly's getting the worst of it, but I arrived at the pub just after kick off and it wasn't until into the second half that I finally found out that it was Hammond who was playing alongside Cork, he was utterly impossible to spot until then and I was trying to work out who the team were from the moment I arrived. Then I finally spot him and he's sent off soon after. Connolly seemed quite ineffective too.
  25. I guess their first response is always just to get out as quickly as possible when disturbed, at least that's how it was when i confronted a burglar. I used to rent a room on the ground floor of a house in Moseley when I was younger. Once I heard a noise outside in the middle of the night and looked out to see an enormous bloke attacking the lock of my car with a sharpened screwdriver. I leapt up and ran out to confront him, dressed in just a pair of boxers. I'm not a big bloke at all, but despite being twice my size and armed, he ran off down the street. I even chased him a short way. It seemed odd later, but maybe the sight of a nearly naked bloke running at you shouting in the middle of the night would scare off most people.
