Let's just remember the pre-season targets.... Liverpool were aiming to win the league. Spurs were aiming for Champions' League spot. We wanted to improve on last season, despite the player exodus. I suspect the top two might struggle to achieve their aims, whereas we are just about on track.

The best way to avoid more glamorous clubs raiding our squad is to buy rubbish and develop no one through the academy. Every club has a limit - United couldn't hold onto Ronaldo, ditto Liverpool with Suarez. And even if we qualified for the Champions' League there would always be an offer from a club who might actually win it. Tis the way, but we are in a pretty good place, and able to offer quality players time on a pitch - if that motivates them more than shiny wheel trims and prison-style neck tats. If Lovren is worth £20M we should be able to get £75M for Clyne.

The thing that still astounds me is that senior people just let it go, they chose ratings or donations over doing the right thing. I think the most admirable thing about their whole season is that the fans have never given up on the team or the manager, they have stood shoulder-to-shoulder throughout all of the tough times, never booed, never been negative, and have been an inspiration to sports fans everywhere. I suspect that most fans are mature and balanced enough to recognise what a fantastic time we shared with Rickie and to give him a deserved reception. The last time Kelly spoke he talked of their academy as being the envy of all the top clubs.
