People with high egos routinely lie to themselves about their own capabilities. Scienza on the other hand seems quite relentlessly honest with himself. The Guardian article goes further than any I've seen in his discussing his psychological struggles, including some quite devastating self-doubt (hardly a feature with egotists), so openly.
