    DivX or Xvid codec needed more than likely, try downloading klite codec pack if you want to watch in WMP or you can download VLC as TDD suggests, which will play anything you care to throw at it.

    Most AV types would say Plasma at that size, I think its all down to personal preference, I would go and have a look round some shops and see what you like the look of. I assume you would watch a lot of sport so I would look for something with a refresh rate of 100 hz or more to reduce motion blur and judder.
