Gao fell foul of a sudden change of the Chinese Govt policy about investment in overseas football clubs . This meant he couldn’t use any of his money in China to buy Southampton so had to use his off shore money to buy the club . This left him with little or no spare cash to invest in the club . After that it wasn’t long before he had to sell but that took quite some time even though Southampton didn’t command the eye watering price that other clubs did ! So the club was in limbo .
