Saints 27th on the 131 year League Table

Stumbled upon this little nugget of Footie trivia:

Someone with time on their hands has put together a League table covering 131 years of the First Division and Premier League (I know its hard to believe the football was around before football was invented in 1992).

Saints sit at 27th, in the top half of a 65 team league. An interesting little read to while away the tea break, poor old bottom club Glossop North End 'The Hill Men' propping up the league.

With the hood right up on the anorak the dynasty behind Arsenal for many years came from the money made in the cotton mills of Glossop probably 131 years ago.

Interesting, surprised Pompey are so high on the list, still behind us mind but I assume most of their points were when Pathe news were still doing the filming

And that's all that matters.

Wondered how old it was but Bournemouth on 150 games makes it easy to check it's completely up to date.

Biggest surprise for me was Middlesbrough in 19th. Never would include them in a list of "sleeping giants", more of an "also ran" and their trophy count must be similar to ours yet they've been in the top division about half as long again as we have.

Same! I think their League Cup win under McClaren was their first ever trophy.

If I read this correctly the table makes no allowance for the League in which the games were played

I must dig out a table I have somewhere where teams were given 92 points for winning the top division and one point for coming bottom of the 4th tier

This was a bit bit representative in my view

I read it as only for games in the top league whatever it was called at the time over the 131 year period, I thinks thats covered in the text, pub quiz question is which teams have never been relegated from the top flight. The answer use to be Everton, Arsenal & Coventry but they buggered that up under WGS.

If I read this correctly the table makes no allowance for the League in which the games were played

I must dig out a table I have somewhere where teams were given 92 points for winning the top division and one point for coming bottom of the 4th tier

This was a bit bit representative in my view

There was a table a few years ago that covered all 4divisions where we were almost bottom (think Torquay were bottom), it probably only included the 92 teams in the top 4 divisions. Guessing our 3 seasons in L1/CCC may have helped a bit.

These are just results for the top division at the time, either the Prem League or old division 1. I thought the same as you at first because of the wording but if you scroll down the likes of Barnsley are on 38 games played thus showing that it's just top division (otherwise it'd be higher because they'd have played in the champ/div1 the year before and after at least).

Spot on my Canadian friend

Results from top division since 1888.

During this time Saints were running away with the Southern League most years which is hardly ever mentioned.

Everton were promoted to the top flight in 1955 I think, so they must have been relegated to get promoted if you see what I mean....?
