Curses/Luck/Karma and this past week

It occurred to me driving back from golf today

I've felt for a long time that we had seemed to be cursed. Maybe that is too harsh, but we seemed to get more than our share of bad luck.

It happened in matches, near misses, dodgy decisions against us always seemed to outweigh the ones for us, it happened with injuries (Killer in the warm up at Portsmouth, Neimi in the cup final)

It just seemed, looking back over the past 6 or more years that things were always going against us.

In some ways even the failed "takeover" by Mike Wilde & Leon seemed to be met with a shrug of the shoulders and a well we're Saints that's what happened.

Then, when we finally fell off the edge of the cliff and went into admin, it seemed (from here) that we had again been hit by the bad luck wave, we get the Essex boy in and thinsg don't go smoothly, and then Pinnacle....

People keep saying what goes around comes around, you make your own luck, but suddenly, the emergence out of almost no-where comes the fact that despite Fry, MJ, Pinnacle, Seymour Pierce et al we get a billionaire owner.

As a Saints fan it simply doesn't happen, we aren't this lucky.

But I wonder, just wonder, is this the year that our luck really has turned? Suddenly the dodgy decision start to go in OUR favour on the pitch? Our key players stay fit and healthy and don't fall over their toothbrush or something.

Maybe even the Sky curse has gone with it?

We spent 6 or more years in hell, wow, if people are right about this karma thing, we're just starting 6 or more years of heaven

Are you saying that we may score in the 94th minute Phil?

Never thought about it that deeply, but you could well be right!

It has to be said though, there is still one all-important decision to be made/announced, one that will have a massive impact on where we go from there - that of who will be our first team manager.

I do hope you are right though, Phil. We are definitely due a run of good luck!

Maybe the recession will help us again. We had the best period in our history in a period of political upheaval with recession, high oil prices (when we could get it), fighting wars on two fronts, high unemployment and a failing bank system. Not so different to the climate we find ourselves now. Even the price of a ticket this season is comparable, in real terms, to the price in the late 70s and the 80s.

My Dad has being saying we are cursed since 1949 when we failed to go up despite being umpteen points clear at Easter. Nothing now will ever change his mind. Even when we went about 6 years without missing a penalty he was always grumbling that "we always miss pens"!

You know well that I've been harping on about Karma for the past 7 years and since we left the Dell things have definitely not gone well for us beyond the Cup Final under WGS. Oddly it was Strachan who refused to allow the Cedren Dragonoak, the Witch, into St Mary's to perform the full pagan rites. Maybe the new owners should bring her along for the opening match to pour virgins wee on the corner and goal posts.

Phil, you say the takeover seems to have ended 6 years of bad luck but have you forgotten Pharoah's Dream of 7 fatted cows and 7 lean cows that Joseph interpreted as 7 years of plenty, 7 years of famine. I've always found life runs in cycles of 7 good years and 7 difficult years. Let's hope Lowe's decision not to invest after the Cup Final was divinely inspired and we are at the doors of a Golden Age.

Certainly we reaped what we sowed where Skates were concerned and our fortune dipped as theirs was on the rise. Let's forget about all our south coast neighbours less we end up in the Blue Square. The North London Yobbies present themselves as the object of future nastiness.

As Stevie I would doubtless agree, you make your own luck - thats how I defended Southampton to my mates throughout the 90s as we survived one relegation dogfight after another. For some, we still are one of the jammiest teams in existence.

In the late 90s I remember a newly promoted manager being asked - 'where do you want to finish this season?'

Reply - 'one place above Southampton, cos they always survive'

Might have been Neil Warnock but not sure
