8/8/09 - Trouble?

Well it could hardly be worse since in my experience these are the 3 of the teams that caused most trouble at Saints in the past albeit mainly in the mid 70's though I fear it will not have changed. Grief it would be even be possible for Skate/Rangers fans to attend at least some of the Saints game. A potential nightmare I reckon and ridiculous timing so indeed they should move the Pompey game, preferably to Ibrox !

I think this was mentioned on another thread a while ago, and as someone said there, really the only real place any of the four sets of fans are likely to meet en masse is London. It does seem a bit stupid though, I assume they won't have many police at notarf krap as its just a friendly, otherwise Hampshire Constabulary are going to be rather stretched!

Rangers might not but Portsmyth? Not on Rangers Radar.

Well we were in 1974 though it was no exactly a friendly, think it was a Texaco Cup match at the Dell and they did not like losing ( both home and away as it turned out ! ) Worst game for trouble I ever saw at the Dell.

Too many people read too much into the saints Pompey thing,99% of saints and Pompey fans are only mouthy from a distance and can't be arsed or are too scared to take it any further.

There are always going to be a minority who go that extra mile and if they turn up looking for a fight then I'm sure they will find exactly what they were looking for.

From experience the only people who get hurt or are doing the hurting are the people who are expecting it.

True, I remember it (just). What I'm saying is Rangers wouldn't be interested in turning out for PFC any more than any other English club.

And Millwall don't bother anymore since the police follow their every move from the second they leave home in the morning.

Wasn't that the 'Anglo-Scottish Cup' I went to the Dell leg of that, supporters all mixed up together, mostly acting as per stereotype and therefore comatose for the second half :-)

On the pitch we took them apart!

Great memories

Good stuff, not only P*mpey having a reason to come here, but Southampton is renowned for having a very large Catholic Northern Irish community, hence Celtic fans.

Could be interested, but it won't, can't see either team travelling..... having said that, I wouldn't be suprised if Millwall went back to London via P*mpey, they f*cking hate them!

If it's the 1974 game you're on about, then it was definitely the Texaco Cup game. It was my first game and I remember as you say, with home and away supporters mixed in together at the Archers Road End, with the Rangers fans all seemingly pssed.

I can remember them lobbing beer cans at Channon and being covered in beer as they flew overhead (or was it pss!!!!!).

Both I think, a horrible experience :( Yes, I was in the Archers Rd end as usual and there must have been a good few thousand Rangers fans.

3-1 at Ibrox and 2-0 at The Dell so at least we stuffed them on the pitch ! Reached the final, lost I think to Newcastle aet.

Edit: Ah found it in the excellent History of the Saints 1885-1987, still got my original copy complete with my name and that of my Dad amongst the 770 who subscribed pre publication. Also notice amongst others John Motson ( of course!), Derek Obee ( distant relative), Ron Davies and Micky Channon.

I remember that Rangers game well. Afterwards we walked up the pitch from the Milton Road End to get out through the Archers road end (I lived in Greville Road then). I remember climbing over the wall and the terraces were soaking wet and it stunk of ****!!

I doubt Millwall will want to mess with the mighty Yoof, more likely they will bottle it and head down portsmouth for a rumble with some gay sailor types.

And its idiots like you that will give them an excuse to show that they would not bottle it, remarks like this praising the violence of the "YOOF" are more likely to antagonise other fans and bring back the bad old days when it was hell to go to football, why don't you stop trying to destroy the good work ML is doing by encouraging young children back to ST Mary's with thier parents, by encouraging thugs to kick off and parents stop taking thier kid.

There were loads of them on the train back through Eastleigh that night. The O.B. had a struggle keeping them away from us. Yet in '77 when a few of us went up there for the pre season tournament we were treated well and hardly bought a round all weekend!

When we got off at Eastleigh we were pelted with full beer cans. Luckily none made their intended target. I've never seen a footy fan waste beer, so we knew what was in them.

We always had at least two O.B. on our train home, Eastleigh Boys, Winchester Boys, London Reds. Plus the odd few stray opposition if they weren't on a special.

Were you at Bradford in 1976 ? Leeds fans were allowed to buy tickets on the day as Saints did not sell their full allocation ( mainly as some fans did not go due to a massive hike in ticket prices) which was a disgrace. There was a steady stream of objects including full Party 4 cans, one hit my mate flush on the head, he barely felt it !

Didn't miss a home or away game that season, including ALL the FA Cup games (Villa away on a Wednesday night). We were one of the few groups of lads who seemed to get away lightly from Bradford. As you say, it was the Leeds fans who were up for it.
