Gate of the Day

"Nine points adrift at the foot of League One. two points from four games, yet still the Southampton faithful turn up in droves - 19,169 saw the 1-1 draw with Brentford, more than at five Championship grounds this weekend."

So says the Daily Mail in a snippet near the foot of page 74 of today`s edition. Last week there was a snippet about the choice of pies at SMS. But no mention of the games themselves. Seems to me that attention in the press and perhaps among the fans has turned from the high expectations of success on the pitch to just getting on with enjoying being there. I`ll settle for that for now.

Helped no end by a big turn out of away fans last Saturday - I've seen Premier League clubs bring down less travelling support than Brentford did .

To be fair, coming to a ground like St Mary's is like a big cup draw to a club like Brentford. It's not too far and they had a much bigger ticket allocation than they would have to just about any away ground they visited in years.

I would suspect that we will see similar away followings from the likes of Yeovil, Bristol Rovers, Exeter, Brighton, Southend and Milton Keynes. Along with the bigger teams like Leeds, Norwich and Charlton.

would rather have a gate of 5000 and a 1-0 win at the moment to be honest.

Really? If that was the case I think Mr Liebherr would walk away and give us up as a bad idea. Then what? A club with a clean slate and no debt would be open to those with very little initial investment, say £500,000, to come in and ramp up the debt for another cycle of trying to buy/gamble promotion only to crash and burn.

Don't always agree with Chapel End Charlie but we are being a tad stupid if we think 19,000 represents a good turn out of Saints fans given the Brentford's surprising level of support and we have also played Millwall who must have one of the strongest away support in this league. Where have all those fans gone who were so desperate to attend last season's home game against Charlton when the the horse of our own destiny had bolted? Oh no we must save our club, we must do all we can. oh what a sad day for football and this great city blah blah. Rich bloke comes in and buys the club and gives us a platform from which we can help ourselves build a future and surprise 10,000 fans no longer seem interested. Sometimes you can't help thinking they will ultimately get what they deserve.

Could be interesting when the likes of Wycombe. Hartlepool, Tranmere, Walsall and Stockport come to town to name just a few.

That's a fair and independent assessment of our gate, particularly given the problems with the late release of season tickets and the disaster of last season.

Given our second home match last season had a gate of 15,000, then it is a decent gate for the Third Tier and following on from the rubbish we have had to put up with recently.

Two 20,000 gates stand up to scrutiny and the Mail's unbiased view backs this up.

You're not serious?

Every city with a football club in this country has a number of fans who only turn up when there is something to play for or if they feel what they'll go to watch will be good "value for money" - we're no different. Look at Newcastle, just by going down they've lost 15,000 or so from their gate and that's because a large amount of 'football fans' in this country only want to see Premiership football. If Liverpool or Arsenal got relegated, it'd be exactly the same.

Remember when we were in the Prem? We were getting 30k most weeks and that's because 10,000 fans were there not to support Saints as such, but to watch good players and big names. Every single club has these fans who turn up for the big matches. You'd be stupid to think otherwise.

Anyone can see that for the third tier of English football 19k is a brilliant attendance and those who say otherwise are probably either trolling or just enjoy winding people up. Not that I'm suggesting you've ever done either of those things 19.

I think you'll find that a lot of lads went back to playing on a Saturday after we dropped out of the Premiership. I know of several that gave up playing once we moved from the Dell to St Mary's because they could get a Season Ticket or at least regular matchday tickets but the lure of actually playing was greater than watching football in the CCC.

looking back on the cheery days of those last two home games last season, it could be suggested that the turnout and enthusiasm shown by the fans supporting that awful team was a factor in convincing our new owner that the club was a worthwhile investment.

I am still disappointed that the people who had revelled in Prem football couldn't be arsed in that hour of need.

For those who did show, we saw some rubbish, but it wasn't a wasted effort.

Makes a change for The Mail to say something positive about us, even mentioned Redknapp's failure to stop us dropping out of The Prem.

Now that is progress

I never thought The Mail had it in for us!!!

Charles Sale as an individual was often used by Lowe to leak stuff and would often cosy up to him, but in general I've never viewed that any of the mainstream media (including The Mail) had it in for us.

TBH we're probably off their radar, until we either bloodied the noses of one of the big boys or did something that got their attention (Woodward, Redknapp, Lowe's quotes etc).

And even if The Mail does have it in for us, then it's even more remarkable that despite "having it in for us" they go on to praise us for a pretty decent gate.

Maybe the idiot(s) out there who think it was a poor gate could give us an idea of what they would constitute a decent gate;) . I wonder what they had to say about the many 13k, 14k and 15k gates we got last year.

Quite, Um Pahars is now calling them unbiased to support his own arguments. Couldn't make it up.

PLEASE! Give it a break. It is becoming boring and rather tiresome. I love a bit of banter but you really do take some beating . I'm sure if UP (and others you love to bait) were to write that today was a Tuesday, you would find something to argue and disagree with:rolleyes:

All to the good. If we maintain our support we will attract better players in the long term, I hope.

OK Norm but you clearly don't realise that UP has been my resident stalker for months. How do I know? My infraction for past dismeanours against his good standing is due to expire in about 2 weeks. UP holds a grudge tighter than he does a Thai pavement after a night out on holiday allegedly.

I did have him and few others on ignore but not being able to read their hissy fits and convulted ways of trashing my opinions no matter how reasonable kind of ruined the entertainment.

He doesn't hold a grudge, he just sees you for what you are. You're a strange schizophrenic poster who has used multiple usernames to wind everyone up by deliberately putting your vews across in a hostile manner.
