Thedelldays Posted 23 September, 2009 Share Posted 23 September, 2009 How on earth did we get in the position or allow a situation where the club never owned the club shop at The Dell... how the hell did Wembley own it..? odd if you ask me

I think Hummell UK went bust and were bailed out by Wembley Leisure (similar to Canterbury UK now being owned by JD) and they took over the existing franchises (Dell shop being one). I may be wrong but that is how I remember it.

70's Mike Posted 23 September, 2009 Share Posted 23 September, 2009 when the shop first opened their was no real market for replica gear etc, in fact i think it even sold football boots, letting someone else run the shop and take the risk was, at the time, a good move but football marketing of products took off and it became a very bad mistake and saw the club lose a lot of money

I may be wrong but that is how I remember it. That sounds roughly right - when they went bust they did so owing the publishers of our first book quite a bit of money. To be fair to Askham he coughed up half the debt because a Saints employee had ordered the books, but we were all left out of pocket.

Channon's Sideburns Posted 23 September, 2009 Share Posted 23 September, 2009 bought a pair of boots with the patrick label there once Bought loads of those white Patrick Shinpads - remember them with the Kevin Keegan signature along the front? (Stuck on I know, but back then it meant everything!) Not to mention - the Padded Autograph Books...bought a Saints pencil once, lead broke off in my hand (christ only knows how I managed it) - still there to this day, 25+years later. Remember the A4 sized Player Photos (signed) that you could buy for a quid - with matching badges.....they were a status symbol in the Family Centre I tell you.. The last thing I bought in the shop was the commemorative Home Shirt from 2001 - the first Friends Prov one. Had special crest round it with The Dell on it. £15 if I remember rightly... I got a pair of my black school trousers, fashioned a No8, cut it out and passed it to my Mum for sewing on..I was on a Moran phase at the time. Little did I know it was a new pair...haha..at least I looked cool eh? No-one else had theirs numbered.... I did look a bit funny at school though... Funny how Wembley ownership has been mentioned as I had totally forgotten all about that but remember it now you mention it! I remember going down there with my mum Around 94/95 season and getting the saints training shell suit made by Pony I was 10 at time but remember it costing a fair bit even back then, the jacket looks similar to the one Noel Gallagher wore in Wonderwall I think. Verbal Posted 23 September, 2009 Share Posted 23 September, 2009 The thing I remember most about that little shop was that it was a nightmare getting in there on matchdays! But you should have tried when we were near the end of one of our great escape seasons in the late 90s. Tumbleweed would have passed through undisturbed. Some great bargains though. Still got my especially useless Saints leather passport cover. Cost me £1 I think.
John Boy Saint Posted 23 September, 2009 Share Posted 23 September, 2009 My Granny use to complain whenever I presented her with another Saints patch to sew onto my coat, she always reckoned that I must have spent enough in that shop to buy a new centre forward. One of the best things I remember buying in the shop was a team line up A3 poster on a Friday, which was always available in August back in the late 70's early 80's then waiting at the players entrance at 1pm for them to come out of training and get them to sign themselves on it, then carefully roll it back up to take home an pin on the wall for a season. I bet if they printed an A3 squad poster for sale today it would sell out............ There was also the squad photo as a Jigsaw at Christmas which had a black and white puzzle on the reverse. OldNick Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 I remmeber pre the club shop across the road where they sold old programmes. I think also the club openly tried to embarrass Spurs when they owded us money from the shop by putting a big thing in the matchday programme when we played them. I still have my plates and mugs after the cup final win. Talking of silk scarves I have 3 or 4 in mint condition from the league cup final. Is it time for silk scarves to return , after all we do have a great interest in the 70's?

Son of Bob Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 Coolest boots you could buy back then! I disagree. I got a pair of Adidas Majectic from there and I was the envy of all. They had red and white soles which was unheard of then and they were made of the softest leather I'd ever felt. They were pricey but it helped that my Dad got a hefty discount at the shop. I also remember getting a turquoise, white and blue Patrick kagool from there. Any self respecting casual from the 80's will remember these!
