Southend have always played home games on a Friday even when I lived there thirty years ago. I think its to avoid clashing with the London teams which many Southend folk also support i.e. West Ham.

They haven't, we went there on a saturday a couple of season ago when we were in the championship.

There was talk that it was because of the trouble caused by some of our fans there a couple of years ago...but it could also be because England are playing on the Saturday and many lower league teams (as we are) move their games so as not to clash with England games and lose potential fans

The England game is not currently being broadcast on ANY network - Setanta had the rights and I believe whoever has them now has not sold them on and plans to show the game as PPV over the internet.

What I meant was, they used to traditionally play on a friday night for the reason I stated. As you say, probably not any more. so I don't know what the reason is.

You are correct, there was an article on the Beeb website about how they do the fixture schedule, and they did mention that one of the quirks they have to account for is not having Southend at home at the same time as West Ham.

Fair enough, think I probably took the wrong meaning from your post. From the other post it sounds like the hoolie wannabees have spoiled a decent day out for everyone else:rolleyes:

If it ain't on the smelly then I can go down the Golf range with my mate and improve my novice game while the missus gets very happy with life with his wife.................. For those thinking of a bit of girl on girl action sorry but they will spend the evening in a menage et trois avec Pierre Smirnoff putting the world to rights.

I think they only did so when certain London teams were playing at home on that Saturday, so when there was a clash, they requested a change to the Friday. However, not all requests are agreed by the police and the league, so it's never been a 'usual' thing.

Anyway, we better win. That's all I care about

Intentionally or otherwise, don't Southend gain a small(ish) advantage over the course of a season by playing a significant portion of their home games on a Friday night?

(a) their players are more used to playing at that time of the week and

(b) away teams are likely to have less supporters than on a saturday due to work committments and other logistical issues

perhaps?

It would be almost interesting to see how southend's Friday night win ratio compares to their Saturday home game win ratio

When I lived there a good few years ago, I was told that the club were able to make more money from the market held in the car park on a Saturday than they lost by playing matches on the Friday evening; therefore .......

It won't give them an advantage this Friday night - we're gonna murder em! ;)

I think the answer is in the post about the fixtures computer, and Southend requesting to not play at home the same weekend as West Ham. From a logistical POV, the OB, stewards etc would prefer one team in that neck of the woods playing regularly on a random night, as the knock on effect (Colchester, Ipswich, Norwich etc, not forgetting D&R, Leyton and other clubs!) makes it a plannig nightmare!

Good read btw.
