I'm Watching The Grey Shirts Match

Nicky Butt misses an excellent chance.

Up the other end, Doddsy crosses into the crowd.

Steve Bruce fouls Simon Charlton down the left side, and Matty takes the kick. Belted into the 6 yard area, and Ken Monkou heads the ball into Schmeichel, and then pops in the rebound.

1-0 Saints. Woohoo..!

11 minutes in.

I am currently watching Saints away to Forest from 20/12/1986. It ended 0-0.

Still no goals. Someone's just taken a throw-in. He had a moustache. He threw it to someone else with a moustache. There is a man in the crowd behind the first player with a moustache who also has a moustache. He's wearing a blue coat but has a red scarf on. I think he may be sat with his son, but he might not be related to the boy at all. The boy may be with the man on the other side of him, who doesn't have a moustache. The boy, obviously, doesn't have a moustace either. Bit that doesn't necessarily mean he is with the man without a moustache. I wonder if the man with a moustache has still got a moustache now. That would be funny. Maybe the one without a moustache has grown one! The boy is probably in his thirties now so he may have a moustache. Still no goals.

Shipperley crosses from the right, Schmeichel comes out to grab, but loses it, and it falls to Le Tiss, who pops it over his head, and with 2 ManU defenders throwing themselves about, finds the only place where he's guaranteed to beat them - hitting the inside of the far post. Cue mayhem..!

3-0. Saints just making ManU look second rate now.

1st half whistle goes.

2nd half begins with ManU in Blue & White shirts. More excuses. They are supposed to be better players.

Lots of action. ManU get one back 3-1, and the game ends. Isn't it amazing how I can move time around to my whim..?

The next game I fancy re-watching is the next season's match.

It's funny how certain things can be remembered very clearly, and others slip your mind entirely. I know exactly what I was doing when this match was being played, as I had it on the radio at work whilst we were doing a network installation / upgrade around one of our office buildings, and when the 3rd goal went in I went running up and down the corridor telling the other 2 working for me, and they didn't believe me !

I would have liked to have seen us 3 nil down at home to Man U by half time, then on such a sunny day changing our shirts at half time because due to the closeness of the crowd and the number of replica shirts in it all our players complained that they could not see each other. For starters I don't think we would have got away with it, if we had and gone on to win 4-3 the changing of shirts at half time would have outlawed for ever.............

I was in my bedroom with it on the radio.

My younger brother going more and more mental with excitement as the goals went in.

6-3 we were behind the goal in the Milton

So when was the 1-0 when Kevin Davies scored?

I think it was Davies that scored in the 1-0 folowing the 6-3. Beattie did get the goal in another 1-0 win over Man Utd but that was much later at St Mary's (last minute winner).

God that 1-0 was an absolute nail biter as well! Early goal, chants of we want seven followed by some really resolute defending.

With the 6-3 I always wondered how that result would been greeted around all the other grounds... "Southampton 6.... Manchester United....3 " It must have been amazing to hear how that result sounded. Liverpool and City must have loved us that day...

Beattie's winner was in 2003. I remember it well because I watched it in a bar in Uganda with quite a few local Moan Utd supporters. Oh how I laughed whehn he headed in the corner in the last minute.

Especially as Newcastle had beaten them 5-0 the week before. Albert's chip over Schmeicel for their last goal was the inspiration for MLT's goal.

I remember rushing back from work (where my boss was trying to do my performance review) to get to the 1-0 game. What sort of person tries to do a review at 5:30 anyway? Wasn't Kevin Davies injured scoring in that game?Out for about 6 games or something?Bastards!

I remember I was on holiday for the 4-0 'boro game and I thought "that's it. I've missed the game of the season..."

Then came that 6-3 against ManU... :-)

I've got an interview somewhere, where Dave Beasant extolls the virtues of MLT saying, not only was he supremely skilled, but he was a heck of a scholar as well, e.g. picking up the fact that Schmeichel stood well off his line, for a lot of the time. If you look at the goal [almost everywhere including Youtube], Matty doesn't even look up to see where Schmeichel is. He knows.

For me, the best football is intelligent football.

If you watch the match again you see that the ManU players had it in for Davies. He was raked on the back of his ankle and it could have finished his career (and cost us 7 million)
