John Mortimore

Not sure if John Mortimore still has an official position at SMS but I was pleased to see him sitting amid all the Saints fans at Orient. Says a lot when someone who has been President can still go to away matches and sit among the great unwashed!

John is a genuine link to the 60s - long may he remain a fan.

He's a Lab Technician.....SFC were forerunners in Sports Science

He was Jimmy Gallagher, he was the trainer and later on the physiotherapist at the Dell.

Jim was well regarded in football circles and was selected to accompany an England B tour of the Far East. He also had many offers to join Div 1 clubs but was too attached to Southampton.

I always felt our best football in that era co-incided with his tenure as assistant manager, and I thought we suffered somewhat when he first went off to Greece.

Trying to put names to faces in picture. Reckon it was taken around 1968.

Middle row

George Horsfall, Frank Saul, Can't remember, Mick Channon, John McGrath, Hughie Fisher, Jimmy Melia, Tony Byrne? John Mortimer, Jimmy Gallagher

Front row

First two on left I can't recall, Ron Davies, Ted Bates, Terry Paine, Fred Kemp, John Sydenham

After Hollywood on front line is David Thompson

Your question marks are correct as well

Have been fortunate to play alongside 8 of this squad at various times.

Although they were getting on a bit all of them were good sports and still possessed the hallmark of a professional player.

Dennis Hollywood used to frighten me and he was on my side!!

Had a drink with the injury prone Ken Jones recently. He makes me laugh. Pulled a muscle lifting his pint!!

I played against him once (I think he was playing for Ford Sports) - he was very overweight and I didn't get past him once (I did get launched over the touch line, though).

Picture of Ken in one of this week's Echos. He is now a top snooker coach based in Chandlers Ford. Nice man too.

Saw Dennis Rofe at Asda today and before anyone says he was not putting out cones in the car park, great to see the likes of him can still shop with the great unwashed ;-)

Why cannot Saints go back to that style of kit? I remember having those woollen socks!

Ahh kit.

Desperately wanted a Saints kit when I was about 7 or 8. Taken to Toomers in London Rd. Only replica kit available was the Arsenal style ie Red with white sleeves but that was OK as it was close enough to the Saints red & white.

Later found a white shirt with a Saints figure + halo on the front.

My Nan later knitted me a green woolen Goalies jumper and I nicked my Mums best gloves.

Oh so innocent then compared to the plethora of stuff available nowadays.

Also had the old style boots with studs with protruding nails into the soles of your feet!!

I used to go to school with his son

Brilliant picture that really stirs the memories.

Jimmy Gallagher was a great guy.

He was known for sprinting onto the pitch at incredible speed whenever a Saint was injured - moving at a far higher rate of knots than any of the players could muster.

No new-fangled medical technology for him. In his hand was an old ball bladder with the top cut off. It contained really cold water and a sponge. That less than sophisticated combo had a habit of getting players back on their feet very quickly.

I was in hospital in Alton in 1976 for a knee operation and Ken Jones was in the bed next me having his knee cartilage repaired. I remember it well because we listened on the radio to the 5th round replay from the Dell of the FA cup match against West Brom. Fortunately I recovered in time to make the Semi and then the Final at Wembley.
