Tamesaint Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 The ground did look on the empty side last night but I was still slightly surprised to see that last night's attendance was only 16.4k. The weather was foul ,it was the highest attendance in Leagues 1 & 2 & Wycombe did not bring many but blimey - even Pimpey got more!!! We are used to more. 2 matches on the south coast on the same night. I wonder if there are some people who watch both Saints and Pimpey and last night chose to watch the (supposedly) higher standard game at Pimpey rather than come to SMS. St Mary's - 16,402 of which 679 were away fans = 15,723 supporting the No1 team in Hampshire. Fartton Dump = 17,034 of which the Brum Mail said "The 3,000-plus Villa fans were belting ..." and " Villa’s sold-out allocation of jubilant travelling supporters ..." means about 14k misguided fools from the slum part of Hampshire. Dannyboy_Saint Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 It was cold, wet and a mid-week tie. Lots of reasons to give it a miss, especially if you bad work the next day. 16k is still more than we were averaging last year in the championship and a damn sight more than 80% of other ground in this league. Last season for games in midweek we were getting 14,000 so even though 16.4K is disappointing its still a great improvement on last season
Saint_clark Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Cold, wet, christmas round the corner, midweek game, very good attendance nonetheless for League One. I look at it as Pompey ONLY getting 1k more than us for a quarter final tie.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I think we can hold our heads high despite the temporary dip last night. 2 divisions below and our fans remain by far the best in Hampshire. S-Clarke Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 I felt as well as a low attendance, the atmosphere was slightly subdued too. But tbf i guess most people were completley frozen, i know i couldn't feel my feet at the end of the night!

Seriously though it was very hard to get any singing going in the itchen last night as it seemed everyone was asleep.
Master Bates Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Would have been 16,403 but I couldn't make it. Or, being a season ticket holder was I already automatically included?
Whitey Grandad Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 At least 4 season ticketers behind me weren't there, but I don't know if that affected it. I know of someone who works evenings so he and his 11-year old son wasn't there either. That, the cold weather, school next day, a small number of away fans, it all adds up. Was Markus there? I didn't see him. That would be another one less.
Singapore Saint Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Half the Wycombe team didn't turn up so that's minus 6.
Pip Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 I think we have a lot of kids who attend now due to a favourable pricing structure and a lot of them didn't turn up because it was a school night. Quite possibly their parents couldn't come either when they'd told the kids they couldn't!

gaz Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Midweek League 1 game nearly beating a Cup game between 2 Prem teams on the same night? Thats fantastic! Down, negative men, down!

docker-p Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 16.5 K to watch bottom of league 1, on a wet and miserable night is better than all but a very small handful of clubs could get if they found themselves in our league. Less Portsmyth fans turned out to watch a cup quarter final against Premiership opposition!!!!!!! The Blues few expose themselves again as Hampshires No.
docker-p Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 I look at it as Pompey ONLY getting 1k more than us for a quarter final tie. Take into account Villa had 3K there and Portsmyth attendance is even more pathetic

Jackie@home Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 Don't forget the large number of people who work in retail who can't make it in December. West Quay was open until 9pm on Tuesday, for example. I work Saturdays in December, but, because I'm the boss, we shut at 1pm to make sure I still get to the match. suewhistle Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 I don't think it's that bad. I live abroad but a lot of the friends I go with on my visits live some way away or are sometimes a bit skint. A midweek match, working day after, leading up to Christmas on a shirty night is the one that's going to get missed..
suewhistle Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 An afterthought: how many going to the Box.. :-) , the Exeter match on the 26th December? I'm going to have to hire a car on my visit home unless anybody is going from Maidenhead!? I reckon that could be a good crowd: traditional Christmas Dinner digestive match with turkey sarnies. Quite looking forward to it.
