VectisSaint Posted 15 December, 2009 Share Posted 15 December, 2009 Very unfair way to end a game. Cough. Only unfair when you lose, otherwise its the best way to decide a drawn match in a knock-out competition. What is the alternative? Toss a coin? Draw lots? I think its better than extra time really. An extra 30 minutes tonight would have been bad news with another game coming up on Saturday.
Matthew Le God Posted 15 December, 2009 Share Posted 15 December, 2009 Even though Wotton has been a good penalty taker throughout his career at Plymouth, did anyone think it was going to row Z as soon as he stepped up?

Penalties are brilliant entertainment too. I could watch a penalty shoot out between any two teams anytime anywhere. Just lovely.

saintwarwick Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 Damn right, very unfair. Wembley, Wembley, we're the famous Southampton and we're going to Wembley Interesting to hear the Norwich fans singing about going to wembley with 92 minutes of the game played, guess they didn't count on the last minute followed by the penalties. boxosponge Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 An extra 30 minutes tonight would have been bad news with another game coming up on Saturday. And cost me a hotel room as well, cos the last train home went at 22:
RonManager Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 And cost me a hotel room as well, cos the last train home went at 22:20 It was delayed and didn't go until 2228! I saw the ball hit the back of the net for the winner and then ran most of the way back to Central.

Have to admit when I saw Papa, James and then Wotton step up my heart sank each time! To be fair, though, Papa hit an excellent penalty and Wotton's, to take it to sudden death, was brilliant under pressure. Firmly hit right into the bottom corner! COYR! Erm, it was already sudden death from the taking of the 4th pen by Norwich. If he'd have missed we'd have lost.
david in sweden Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 (edited) Damn right, very unfair. Wembley, Wembley, we're the famous Southampton and we're going to Wembley There's a famous interview with Peter Osgood (on Millenium Saints video, I think) where he talks about the 1976 FA Cup win. He said, " you start to feel that your name is on the Cup," and cited the Hughie Fisher last minute equaliser in an early round, and the later successes as evidence for the positive feelings the team all felt at the time. After the Torquay " fiasco" , we got through on penalties. Following the text last night I was concerned when we scored so early on and nothing else happened. Suddenly Norwich were 2-1 up, and (it speeded up my prayer life somewhat,) but with a 93rd minute equaliser, you just know you're going to win. I've never heard of a penalty shoot-out where a goalie saved THREE shots:o ..and even less a Saints squad where 6 players could score from the spot. Surely, this gives you good vibes for winning at Wembley - doesn't it ? Edited 16 December, 2009 by david in sweden
niceandfriendly Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 Even though Wotton has been a good penalty taker throughout his career at Plymouth, did anyone think it was going to row Z as soon as he stepped up? Not after his good penalty against Torquay. I knew Lambert, Waigo, Lallana and Wotton would score but for some reason I wasn't so confident with James, despite the fact he also scored one against Torquay.
