Jeff Le Taxi Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Anyone help me out here? im sorely tempted to bid but not sure if its genuine, a lot of money to waste on a fake. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1908-1909-SOUTHAMPTON-FOOTBALL-CLUB-BADGE_W0QQitemZ400095653387QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportsMemorabilia_Football_Memorabilia_ET?hash=item5d278f2e0b

mancsaint Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Lithuania is well know as a hive of fraudulant activity...barge pole comes to mind. Looks like it's plastic coated and wouldn't think it was invented then. Mancsaint.
mancsaint Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Thinking about it and looking at thepictures, it's probably a 1950's or 60's product, even later. Mancsaint
The9 Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 It's not the montage that's the issue, the style of badge appears to be mass-produced and is surely only 40-50 years old at absolute most - that appears to be a plastic coating for a start. Bakelite was only used for consumer goods from the 1920s and that was the first true plastic, so there's sod all chance it's 100 years old. They probably made it last week and left it outside in the snow to rust it.
Jeff Le Taxi Posted 11 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Almost convinced mself it was genuine then! i think i wanted it to be the real deal, even as a 50s product its got to be worth around £ 50/60 (think i might make an offer). jawillwill Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 All those players look a little retarded. The guy at the top in the middle looks like he's just escaped from the zoo and the guy on the right has massive ears. Also, why do the people at the bottom seem to look smaller. The perspective is all wrong which should surely knock about2o quid off the asking price. It's probably worth mailing the guy and saying you're willing to pay £130 but not a penny more. COYB&W though.

RonManager Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 Tbf he does not say that the badge dates from 1908 and it may be varnished. It is v. strange that the reverse is identical to the Winnipeg badge. There are no questions as to proof of provenance on the page. I doubt it will sell and it will be interesting to see if it is re-listed and at what price.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 It looks like someone has taken an old photo (or copy thereof) covered it in plastic film and attached it to a 33mm badge die. Look at the reverse; it's identical to the badges produced by do-it-yourself badge machines popular in the 70s onwards. I remember designing and making badges whilst at uni in the early 70s which looked identical.

Nothing saying that the date relates to when it was made, just the team depicted on it. Edit - didnt read the thread - d'oh.

Frank's cousin Posted 11 January, 2010 Share Posted 11 January, 2010 http://www.thebadge.co.uk/ says these 'celluloid covered badges were around in victorian times, but nothing on the clasp type which looks modern to me... There was a short note SOUTHAMPTON FC SKANDINAVISK RUNT 1910 -Southampton FC Scandinavian tour 1910. GENUINE !! I am not expert in British badges , but seeing the rest badges ( badges from period 1906-1916 ) which came together , I have no doubt about Southampton FC badge -ORIGINALITY. Jeff Le Taxi Posted 11 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2010 You sound like a collector - is this badge worth that much to start the bidding at £150? Well seeing as the oldest badges in my collection of 150 uniques are late 1960s and worth £40/50 on ebay id say IF this was genuine (which i now think it might be) it is well worth that sort of money (just wish i could justify it to Mrs Le Taxi in this climate!) This is by far the oldest Saints badge i've seen and probably ever will, in fact i would say it could be the Holy Grail of Saints badges.

Yeah, mine are roughly the same date too (50s-60s, I think), but I can't afford to cough £150 on a badge, no matter how old. At least we know there's something out there from waaaay back. I'll just cut and paste the piccy - much cheaper!! Out of interest, could you post a pic of your earliest badges so that I can see what I've got. I've picked mine up along the way and never spent much over £5-£10 for them. I've got about 30. Edited 11 January, 2010 by RonManager
