Distraction

is anyone slightly concerend that this Pompey game is causing too much of a distraction?

The mood today seemed very different, particualarly with the crowd. It just seems that every moment is a count down to the game. Personally i can't wait but we can lose focus on the league and the jpt. If we mess these up and then lose to Pompey, the season could be looking very different. Difficult job now for Pardew to keep all players focussed on one game at a time.

No, that had nothing to do with it. The atmosphere was poor because we were playing Stockport - I and many others found it very hard to get excited, and as the game went on we were given even less to get excited about. When the referee made some of those horrendous decisions, it picked up a bit.

The JPT has been a distraction imo.

The play-offs were never more than a dream this season for me, the 10pts was though, so I fail to see the cups as a distraction. Beating Pompey will send a huge wave of optimism and feel good factor across the city, which can only be a good thing, likewise the JPT gives us a crack at winning some silverwear for the first time in fuggin years.

The JPT has added 6 fixtures to an already packed schedule - two of those games have gone to extra time and AP has insisted on playing a full strengh side in all games. This will take its toll on players (Lambert for one has looked tired according to some)

The JPT cup is a waste of time imo - Luton are the holders, they were relegated from L2 last year.

We should have used it like other clubs did - try out fringe players, perhaps try a new formation?

We have let in loads of late goals (Brentford and Millwall recently) perhaps with fresh legs we would have won them games?

Alan Pardew is trying to instill a winning mentality into the squad, to do this effectively means to compete professionally in all competitions.

I'm sure the FA introduced a rule whereby you have to field at least six first team members, so you couldn't possibly send out a complete youth team.

That said, when Fergie/Wenger were lambasted a few years ago about playing youth teams in the League Cup, I'm sure one of them retaliated that these particular players were issued with squad numbers pre-season, so they are in first team contention" :)

JPT goes straight to pens as well, no extra time.

Very flat yesterday and everything seemed anti-Pompey rather than pro-Saints. Think the Northam sang OWTSGMI at most 3 times during the game. It is definitely a distraction but I disagree about the JPT being a waste of time. A trip to Wembley for the first time in a generation and chance to win some silverware is a brilliant opportunity and a foundation for where this club may go. A Cup is a Cup is a Cup...

You miserable, dull, forgetful bunch - success breads success. We won yesterday even though we played badly, isn't that what they say about good teams??

Not much more than six months ago we had just been relegated and faced financial ruin. Now we are signing whoever we want, look as though we have a wembley final to go to plus the mouth watering prospect of a home tie against our poor neighbours.

Get over yourselves and just try and enjoy being a saints fan for once!

There was a very simple reason why the atmosphere was flat yesterday; there was an immense gap between the small Stockport fans section and the home fans in the Itchen and Northam. Therefore there was no banter to encourage an atmosphere.

Because of this, one or two of the yoof at the back of the Northam showed little imagination and resorted to the only thing they know, their hatred of the Skates. It wasn't helped by Stockport chanting the play up Pompey chimes either, although we changed it to Pay up Pompey. I really do not know why when there is a small attendance from the away fans, why we can't open block 43 and 44 to home fans. I suppose that the dividing partitions in the concourse might be a problem, although that is surely not insurmountable. It seems strange when the club are debating the possibility of having a Kop end in the Northam and yet when the circumstances arise like yesterdays, we do not grab the opportunity to fill most of those empty seats behind the goal with home fans, to improve the atmosphere.

It was my understanding that there was NO extra time in JPT games. You mean penalties...

Incidentally I've liked the JPT this season. DOing shift work, I can only get to a handful of games, and I very much enjoyed the Norwich game. (More so due to that last minute goal, and an angry other half...) If we get a trip to Wembley, most Saints fans will be happy with that, whatever the outcome!

what do you want more beating pompey, winning jpt or playoffs with no guarantee ?

personally i think just i would like to get to playoffs the chance to get out of this sh!te league and into the championship with the premiership one season away would be so good!

+1

I would swap the JPT and FA Cup place for a better league position.

Getting out of L1 has to be priority no.1

I would imagine the Markus would be thrilled to see his team play at Wembley.

I would imagine he would love taking his family and friend there, and even more so if we win.

I think that is a fair return for saving our club and giving us a positive future.

It is also likely to keep his enthusiasm going for us.

It could be a vital victory in our return to better things.

What about the money the club has earned during the cup runs

That's important but there have been other benefits. AP has had the opportunity to play some of the 'fringe' players and find out more about his squad. If we do get to Wembley the experience will be very useful practice for the players in case we ever do get there in the playoffs.
