Running SFC as a business....

... when Markus Liebherr first took over, he said it will be run like a business and he would leave the club wholey to the Cortese to run.

Since then, a £2m upgrade on training facilities ( which didn't need doing ) and refusing a shirt sponsor next year... I get the feeling that he is loving his new hero status and now see's it more as an expensive toy or hobby as opposed to a business. And also he attends every game... which he said he wasn't going to do.

I think the next few years could prove VERY interesting.

Not sure what your point is here Stu? Are you saying that it doesn't appear to you that we are not being run like a business? I personally think it is - what ML/NC are doing is investing in the business especially the upgrade to training facilities. As to sponsorship of shirts - I doubt the decision was taken without taking a view on the commercial side of things. In my view if we were looking at playing in the Prem next year then this decision to have no sponsor might just have been reversed.

As to the next few years being interesting - I thought that from the day of the take over and the comments (5 year plan etc) that were publicly aired at the time.

Training facilities are not that great (the dome apart) for a club with ambitious plans in the relatively near future. Cortese said himself it was a bit ahead of schedule but was always planned. It will help attract players and I would guess that building and associated costs are lower in the current market, so it makes business sense to do it sooner

I dont think the shirt sponsor thing is that big a deal. Its not big money (£250k pa I have read) and who knows if we actually have anyone queueing up to be the next sponsor! Again, the market is pretty depressed so we may not be losing out much here

Have you actually been inside Staplewood?

It does need sorting out.

FFS our team are playing FIFA 09 on a basic Xbox360 and a 32" LCD.

upgrade on training facilities ( which didn't need doing )

It did need doing. They plan on getting the club back to the Premiership and Staplewood at present is very poor in comparison to Premiership training grounds. Things have moved on a lot since Saints were last in the top flight 5 years ago. Will also help attract players.

Not sure what your point is here Stu?

Seems to me he's saying that it seems Markus Leibherr has stopped treating Saints strictly as a business and is now seeing us as a more direct pet project and 'toy,' which he is hoping to (and may already) get a lot of enjoyment from!

He may be getting involved in us far more then he first realised he would, and may we reap the benefits of it!

My point is... a positive one.

That in my opinion, Mr Liebherr has caught the bug and is not going to worry about losing the odd million here or there.

It really isn't that poor in relation to all Premiership training grounds... it would be one of the best in the Championship and will be one of, if not THE best in League 1.

How many premiership training grounds have you visited?

It certainly is not the best in League One...

Even Leeds is out of date now but still more impressive than Staplewood.

A number of Championship clubs have better than Saints do.

This is the kind of thing you get in the Premiership...

Staplewood is currently very poor in comparison and Saints to to keep up if they aim to get to and compete in the Premiership.

You don't need to visit them. A simple google search shows Saints if now were in the Premiership would have one of the poorest setups and I have been to Staplewood.

OK, so you compare us to Liverpool and Chelsea... then you pick Leeds training ground ( which incidently, from skimming through, has the same facilities that Staplewood has ) then you link to a story about Hull maybe building their own training ground which has " A floodlit pitch and an outdoor all-weather pitch "

Awesome stuff.

I didn't compare, I said "these are the things you get in the Premiership". Many current Prem clubs have some very impressive setups and many others have plans to improve. If Saints did nothing they would be a long way behind when they get to the Premiership.

btw watch the whole Leeds video and you will see it has alot more than Staplewood. Plus Leeds training ground is over 10 years old.

Saints should be aiming to be a midtable Premiership team and have the facilities to match. At the moment they do not as a lot more than 10 teams have or have plans to have better facilities. Staplewood was good about 8 years ago in comparison but since Saints left the Premiership a lot of teams have improved as Saints stood still.

Right. They have an operating Budget for the year. NC stated that the £1M (Not £2M) upgrade is coming our of this years operating budget. The Transfers a total of about £5M (Rounded up to include all the other rubbish fees and such like). Are again with the Operating budget of the year.

Not having a shirt sponsor will mean that we don't get a full £250K not exactly allot when if as it will probably be the case the shirt will be picked up as they are a one off never to be repeated shirt my most of the fans will more than pay for having a sponsor.

Also why does everyone think we are paying stupid wages to people. We might be paying larger than normal wages but it will all be within our operating costs.

So this is basically exactly exactly how they said it is being done. By a planning and budgeting properly.

So why do people keep trying to find fault and complain about the club and how it's run. NC put out the plan when they took over and so far they have not lied to us, and the best bit of all. They are keeping to their promises.

Simple answer to that. Run well (For once)

Dont think the club has been badly run except under Wilde for the past fifty years os so but with more money available hopefully we will have some success.

If the club had not invested in St Mary's and the Academy it is unlikely that we would have Markus now

It has been really the lack of money surely which caused our problems.

Erm.... why do people like you exist?

If you actually bothered to read the thread then you would see on several occasions I have clearly stated that my point is that I believe they are now running the club NOT as a profit making business... which they said they were going to and that possibly Mr Liebherr is sneaking the off cheeky pound or two our way and catching the bug.

So I really don't know what part you feel I was moaning.

I wait in anticipation of your reply.

Agree

Added to that, he has seen what a fantastic club he has bought with a loyal, numerous and passionate fanbase that relatively few other clubs have.

If indeed it has turned into a labour of love then everyones a winner.

I dont think anybody knows but I would expect that it is being run as a business as NC would be paid on some criteria.

could also take into consideration that attendances must be a lot better than NC/ML anticipated and we continue to have cup success this season so maybe more money in the bank hence a little more available for upgrades (Sure NC said that the upgrade to training facilities was a bit ahead of plan)

Don't think SFC will ever be run other than as a business - that said, doesn't mean that ML can't enjoy himself does it.

I know. But that isn't relevant really.

I think it is. When we're talking about owners ploughing money into facilities. It's NOT Leeds United's training ground, it is the training ground Leeds United use. The same as Wellington is not the Skates'.

Staplewood maybe outdated and tired but it is better than anything owned by any club outside the top 10 in the Premier League.

Thorpe Arch was designed and built when it was owned by Leeds. Just financial problems meant they had to sell it. Wellington isn't and never will be owned by Pompey.

If NC refers to us as his Baby would that make ML a Godfather type figure, using that analogy, he knows he has an obligation in any event but is still able to defer daily responsibility to someone else, so can enjoy and spoil it as and when he feels like it, Birthdays etc....but if it becomes a problem due to it being spoilt it is down to the one who had responsibility.

The shirt sponsorship is interesting.

I find it hard to believe that the absence of sponsorship is due entirely to the clubs anniversary.

My belief is NC knows that we will get a higher fee from a sponsor when we are promoted and that Flybe were looking to reduce their contribution. NC calculates the goodwill generated and better negotiating position when promoted is more valuable than an extra season with Flybe.

I think this is a great piece of business.
