Form this season used for prediction for next?

Some have moaned about using differing periods of the season to give us a clue as to how we will do next season so thought would work out our form over the season as points per game.

To give you an idea as to how many points per game we would need for various positions currently;

1st 2.09

2nd 2.06

6th 1.78

7th 1.71

midtable 1.15.

over the last games we have achieved; (first figure the last so many games I have worked it out over, 2nd points per game)

1 1

2 2

3 1.67

4 2

5 1.8

6 1.67

7 1.43

8 1.63

9 1.44

10 1.60

11 1.73

12 1.83

13 1.92

14 1.86

15 1.73

16 1.69

17 1.76

18 1.83

19 1.89

20 1.95

21 1.86

22 1.82

23 1.87

24 1.83

25 1.80

26 1.77

27 1.74

28 1.68

29 1.62

30 1.60

so form, over the last 20 games ;) shows we will be in the battle for automatic!

Well I don't get it. We start off on minus 1 and it fluctuates from there.

Nowhere near promotion form. How do you even get minus points anyway? It's not like we'll have a points deduction next season.

It's really quite simple, but i'll let Nick explain.

point being, this isn't being selective or cherry picking how recent we should look at form, as it includes the whole season and you can choose whether you think the whole season gives the best indication of how we will do next year without -10 (1.6 points per game so top half), last 20 games (1.95 so around automatic), etc

Number 13 gets my vote. Are there any pics to go with it?

So, as I understand this, we are going to pick the number of matches that we play next season so we can get the best stats?

Haven't seen such dedication to debate about an excel spreadsheet since I left a multi-national - it's just like a regional sales meeting. Well boss there was an election/war/earthquake. Yes but what about the resuts? Was always the reply.

The argument doesn't NEED excel. The facts are conclusive. We had a points deduction, we had a bad start, we are drawing too many away games against teams, we have spent a lot of money.

The facts are irrlevant they cannot be changed, how they are interpreted is the crucial argument.

Are we having a good season - Yes

Are we having a season that is better than we hoped for in May/June - Yes

Are we having a season that is good enough to keep all fans happy - No

Are we having a season that is good enough for NC & ML? - How the FECK do we know? How do we know what their inner thinking is? How do we know that the PR statements are aimed at appeasing us or kicking AP's arse.

There is one plain fact that Nick's figures show

So to shoot down his own argument (well reasoned BTW) have we at ANY point this season ove ANY stretch of selected games acheved the points average levels needed to gain automatic promotion next season?

The answer is NO we have not at any time equalled or exceeded the points average needed.

Playoffs next season would be a massive failure and a massive lottery. I do not think for one minute the fans management or oners would think that level of performance a success next year.

This year - hell who cares, insh'allah we will make the play-offs now.

why is my own arguement?

Certain posters on here are looking for arguements for the sake of it.

Quite clearly we look like a play off team.

I think the form from the beginning of this year gives us the best indication of how we'll do next season.

Seeing as we are looking at statistics, in the 8 games that Fonte has played we are unbeaten and have had 4 clean sheets and conceded just 4 goals.

I think that Fonte could possibly be our most crucial signing of all.

And most of those games were away from home.

The way we are not currently dealing with the smaller teams and the fact that we have only beaten 1 team out of the top 6 is pretty much a sad indicament to me.

If someone wishes to come and tell me why next year, in which we will have IMO 80% of the same team we have now (why would we have another spending spree ?), will be fundamentally different then go ahead ??

No about of statistical manipulation will pull the wool over my eyes, we are not performing well enough, and that needs to change sooner rather than later.

I do very much agree with this point, but we are not far short.

I agree, despite others trying to find an argument (or even trying to find a definition of one!)

This team is showing it is ready for play offs and needs to improve to show its ready for automatic promotion.

Hopefully by the end of the season the form will show we are getting the two points per game needed to fill us with confidence for next year.
