spyinthesky Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 Plans agreed by NFDC but has there been any progress with the proposed revamp?
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 I haven't heard any, but it isn't uncommon for organisations to sit on planning permission for years before implementing anything. I am going to guess we'll hear something at the turn of next year, when (hopefully) we're near the top of the league and the club can feel confident that investing millions in the training facility will be for Championship / Premier League players rather than League 1 players. S-Clarke Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 It will probably be started during pre-season when there is the least disruption. cortese said work would start soon in his statement: ''We will soon start on the work to turn our training ground into a state-of-the-art facility. The new Football Development and Support Centre is beginning to take shape. Further physical enhancements are soon to start within the stadium.'' ML has the money and close season during a building industry recession is the perfect time to start.

Saint_clark Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 Perhaps they're waiting for the club to be able to pay for it itself rather than out of ML pocket? They won't wait THAT long. It will take development of all the area around SMS and expansion of SMS itself for that to happen IMO. All in all, around 15-20 years before SFC becomes relatively self sustainable. St Landrew Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 I understood planning permission had been agreed in January. I remember because they could have taken until February to make the decision. The plans were that making the alterations and building was to start ASAP. Has anyone been to Staplewood and seen if any progress has been made or are you assuming none has..? Videos of training on Saints Player show nothing had been done it terms of removing the existing buildings by the end of the season. I was under the impression that in our last season in the championship, gates of around 18'000 was aknowledged as our break even point. So surely now with gates over 20'000 and no mortgage, we must be pretty self sustainable on a day to day basis.
dockland Dave Posted 16 May, 2010 Share Posted 16 May, 2010 I doubt we are, i suspect we have the biggest wage bill in league by a fair mile. Added to that is a drop in tv revenue of 2.7m, and reduced season ticket prices.

If you take those out the equation then I too am fairly sure we are covering our running costs with our income.

I imagine ML would like the club to pay for itself long term - but Im sure he knows the that in the first few years he is going to have to pump in more money than he gets out. The upgrades to Staplewood have nothing to do with whether Saints are able to afford it or not. It has been widely reported, and by Nicola, that Markus is paying for the upgrades out of his own pocket money. The statement by Liebherr when he took over ownership, that while he was around, Saints will not have to ask a bank for one penny, was no idle boast. doggface Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 The plan was always to start the work this summer. I'm sure I read on here (not that it is fact!) that there were issues between the club & builders which had delayed the start.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 Apparently Nicola Cortese demanded that the grass grow in a particular direction and when it didn't he refused to start the building work until it apologised.
ottery st mary Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 The teapot and cups have arrived.. The workmen will not start until the shovels arrive....They have to have something to lean on whilst thinking about the work......Could be some time yet.
