Just been released by pompey and the one position we desparately need.

Are we kidding ourselves thinking we can pick up a couple of old Premier players or is the best we can hope for coming from CC or League 1

Too old for us and would be a big drain on the wages bill. Genuinely don't see any way he would drop to this league but nice idea. I would not agree that he is 'soiled goods' or would the same apply to players like Crouch when he came to us via Villa.

Would imagine he will go to a top half NPC team TBH. Besides which, at 34 he isn't really one for the future and we'd probably need to replace him next season anyway.

Possibly the critical factor.

Not for me. good player but would be another Murty imo.

Who was also 34 when we signed him.

after the Murty dissaster I'd of thought Pardew would leave well alone.

I'm still confused over the Murty decision. Wasn't he already on a pay-as-you-play deal? So, on the same basis for next season, if he wasn't to play at all or very little, it's not going to cost us very much, is it? But, if retained, he would (have been) still be a motivational force at the club.

Or is this a case of the approach being 'they have to go the full journey over the next 4 seasons all the way to the Premiership' to get their contract renewed? And Murty failed that requirement.

Or is it something else, like the club not being too happy with him being on Late Kick Off every week, like a media pundit?

AP always talked highly of Murty, and I was expecting his PAYP contract to be extended. Didn't happen.

What about additional costs....training kit, medical expenses, hospital bills, food (have you seen his gut ;-) ) agents fees, bonus payouts etc

Is that surprising, given that he has had another serious injury since the initial deal ?

Very much so, half the reason why he left Spain when he did. High wages and very little playing time.

Little playing time due to injuries would be a concern, a serious one. As to wages though: what high wages? I'm puzzled that people don't seem to understand the principle of being out of contract & released: it means you have NO wages. Finnan, as it stands now, will be earning precisely nothing from July on. What sort of wage he might attempt to demand will depend on what level of team might be interested in signing him, and how committed he is to continuing to play. If (quite likely) no Premier League team is interested, he will not be earning a huge wage. If Saints do develop an interest, and he is willing to enter talks, you can bet the wage offered will not be massive.

In sum: too high wages are only a factor for players who are under contracts that must be honored; it does not apply to players out of contract.
