Gemmel Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 Just been released by pompey and the one position we desparately need. Are we kidding ourselves thinking we can pick up a couple of old Premier players or is the best we can hope for coming from CC or League
Denzil Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 I wouldn't touch him with yours.
Colinjb Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 He is soiled by association. I would want a good young player in that position anyway.
Arizona Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 Would imagine he will go to a top half NPC team TBH. Besides which, at 34 he isn't really one for the future and we'd probably need to replace him next season anyway.
saintsub Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 Too old for us and would be a big drain on the wages bill. Genuinely don't see any way he would drop to this league but nice idea. I would not agree that he is 'soiled goods' or would the same apply to players like Crouch when he came to us via Villa.
OldNick Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 he is injury prone, old and has not done much for years. Why bother with him?
Saint Luke Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 A guy I work with went to school with him and is still friends with him. No further comment.
Winchester_Saint Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 Wouldn't get very excited if we signed him, getting on now and has had far too many injuries in recent years. The next Graeme Murty springs to mind if we did sign him
lee_saint Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 he is injury prone, old and has not done much for years. Why bother with him? Very much so, half the reason why he left Spain when he did. High wages and very little playing time.
mafiboy27 Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 Not for me. good player but would be another Murty imo.

Daren W Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 Sorry, shouldn't this thread be called "Are Saints Out Of Steve Finnan's League? The answer would be.... YES

Badger Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 Would imagine he will go to a top half NPC team TBH. Besides which, at 34 he isn't really one for the future and we'd probably need to replace him next season anyway. Possibly the critical factor. Not for me. good player but would be another Murty imo. Who was also 34 when we signed him.
Cestrian Saint Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 His wages would be too high and he will probably be picked up by a CCC team or maybe one of the teams who've just been promoted to the Prem.
Charlie Wayman Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 Did we really offer £20m for James Milner? Wow!

Burnsie Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 He wouldn't pass a very stringent medical but he's a class act. made a big difference for Portsmouth in the games he featured in last season.
Chez Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 after the Murty dissaster I'd of thought Pardew would leave well alone.

the saint in winchester Posted 20 May, 2010 Share Posted 20 May, 2010 after the Murty dissaster I'd of thought Pardew would leave well alone. I'm still confused over the Murty decision. Wasn't he already on a pay-as-you-play deal? So, on the same basis for next season, if he wasn't to play at all or very little, it's not going to cost us very much, is it? But, if retained, he would (have been) still be a motivational force at the club. Or is this a case of the approach being 'they have to go the full journey over the next 4 seasons all the way to the Premiership' to get their contract renewed? And Murty failed that requirement. Or is it something else, like the club not being too happy with him being on Late Kick Off every week, like a media pundit? AP always talked highly of Murty, and I was expecting his PAYP contract to be extended. Didn't happen.

What about additional costs....training kit, medical expenses, hospital bills, food (have you seen his gut ;-) ) agents fees, bonus payouts etc
The9 Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 I AP always talked highly of Murty, and I was expecting his PAYP contract to be extended. Didn't happen. Is that surprising, given that he has had another serious injury since the initial deal ?
RinNY Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 Very much so, half the reason why he left Spain when he did. High wages and very little playing time. Little playing time due to injuries would be a concern, a serious one. As to wages though: what high wages? I'm puzzled that people don't seem to understand the principle of being out of contract & released: it means you have NO wages. Finnan, as it stands now, will be earning precisely nothing from July on. What sort of wage he might attempt to demand will depend on what level of team might be interested in signing him, and how committed he is to continuing to play. If (quite likely) no Premier League team is interested, he will not be earning a huge wage. If Saints do develop an interest, and he is willing to enter talks, you can bet the wage offered will not be massive. In sum: too high wages are only a factor for players who are under contracts that must be honored; it does not apply to players out of contract.
