Liebherr plays his fiddle while SFC burns

It's all very well Mr Liebherr wanting to be a completely hands off owner, but surely there has to come a point when Nicola Cortese has to be reigned in. In the latest PR gaffe he has opened pandoras box by picking a fight with the press and the negative publicity which will follow is not good news for the club.

This latest gaffe comes on the back of Nicola annoying fans with the removal of the installment plan and his introduction of a £3 booking tax on tickets. Not to mention his scathing attack on Matt Le Tissier.

So come on Markus, either get involved in the running of the club or get a wise head in to give the inexperienced Cortese some advice on where he is going wrong.

I'm trying to be constructive because Markus Liebherr has spent a lot of money and Nicola Cortese is not doing a very good job on the face of it. Wouldn't it be a good idea to bring in some of the old board members to give him some advice as they have experience?

Either its some sort of joke that I don't get, or I am wrong, but isn't the phrase 'fiddle whilst Rome burns', not 'plays his fiddle'.

I am starting to get a bad, bad feeling about what will happen when Cortese decides he can't be arse in about 6 weeks time...

If Cortese walks away you assume that Markus will walk away. Is this why Cortese can do no wrong in some fans eyes?

Seriously, the vast majority on this forum still think NC is doing a good job and I'll bet 99% of those who don't read a forum but just go to games think he's doing great. Theres maybe 20 posters on here who dont like him, or what he does and thats fair enough, your opinion's valid, but its not representative.

Liebherr as well, I'm sure gets regular updates on the business and if he's not happy will make it known to Cortese. Plus he probably gets his news from the official site, so will be certain everything is going great ;-)

Its a non issue to the vast majority, so lets just focus on the football which is an issue to 100% of us who are all Saints fans.

The problem is that the negativity Cortese's actions have induced can and will affect the club on the pitch. The media are going to be gunning for us and once the British press get their teeth into something they won't let it drop. From now on in it's going to be a steady stream of anti SFC stories and you'd be a fool to think this won't filter through the club.

I concur that upsetting the press is not a clever move, but does it really stop us from being successful in our goal of promotion this season? I think not.

Just out of interest then Dune, whom would you have in to advise Cortese? The old board did such an amazing job of running the company did they not?

I might be wrong, but I doubt it......time will tell. Remember Cortese employ's a respected PR company to advise SFC on all external relationship matters. I'm pretty sure this company also advises PL clubs too, so will be well versed in the right way to get our message out. Success on the pitch will impress the media and football writers as thats ultimately what gets noted. You might disagree in how that company advise Cortese or ultimately what he chooses to accept or ignore (which we will never know), but my bet is they'll get it right. Time will tell as I mentioned.

They were constrained by a lack of finance, but they spent years working at the club so will undoubtedly have a lot to offer. If we'd had a board structure they would have advised Cortese on the error of banning the echo and the press photographers for example. Mistakes should not be made and Cortese is making mistakes on a regular basis now. He clearly needs help.

A chilling reminder if one were ever needed!

It just seems to me that some posters just like "bashing the boss" whoever it is.

Agree with your post, however I do think that we'll start to see a swing of opinion the more of these crazy issues occur.

As people were first starting to grumble about some things NC related, I was happy with the things he was doing.

Then I’ve heard more things that have made me raise my eyebrows a bit, but I’ve still said to myself he knows what he’s doing.

Then I hear something else which makes me think that’s actually a bit odd. But again I think to myself he’s a successful chap who must know what he’s doing.

Then I hear another issue, this time I think crikey that’s gonna get us some bad press. But I still want to think to myself he knows what he is doing.

BUT at what point do the alarm bells start to ring?

Oh pack it in will you, cant you understand that if it wasnt for Cortese then Liebherr would never have got involved with us.

For goodness sake man wake up and stop being so petty, I mean seriously Cortese is taking us forward and giving us hope which is something we havent had for many years. He has big plans for our football club and given his track record is likely to succeed.

Why do you have to always find negatives in the situation. I suggest you calm down take a deep breath, close your eyes and remember where we were a year ago. Also think about the pain that we had been going through for years leading up to when Cortese and Liebherr took over. Also try and remember a chairman that has ever shown as much ambition and has the resources to back it up as our new owners.

Cortese is a wise businessman with a track record of delivering success. It would be unfair of me to judge you as i dont know you Dune but im guessing you haven't been quite so successful in the business world and havent got the pulling power to attract such a rich and powerful owner to our club. Perhaps it might be wise to leave it to an expert, he is doing a pretty damn good job up to now.

We are now one of the richest clubs in the country with owners that are actively trying all they can to bring success to our famous club. These are ambitious successful people we are talking about here who have seen the potential of Southampton Football Club and are clearly enjoying what they are doing and are emotionally involved and attached to Saints. And your suggestion is to get rid of the very man responsible for saving us and showing this ambition. Words fail me

I don't doubt he was sucessful in the past, but running a football club that is in the media spotlight is a different kettle of fish. All decisions have to be thought through more thoroughly and are not black and white. Cortese doesn't seem like he's able to adapt to this role.

I take your point, but I question how much we really know about some of those decisions. Some are just rumours, opinion & heresay. You can find 1 poster who will swear its true and another who tells you the opposite. For me the only thing I felt was unfair and a poor decision was the late withdrawl of the installment scheme, fans should have been given more notice. All the other stuff seems really minor in the big scheme of running a football club and would be unlikely a chairman gets that involved in. He might sanction the decision but I doubt he's making everyone himself.

I can't believe that he can stand back and watch us BURN! We are in such a terrible state right now - how can he just sit there and watch????? Does he not realise that we have lost our first game of the season??? What is the matter with him? He must be blind not to see that we have lost a game of football!!! Pull your finger out Liebherr - we are now 3 points behind the leaders and there is no way back!!!!

Don't listen to these people with their heads in the sand, dune. We must make Liebherr see that the club has been destroyed!! We are in a worse state than we were 15 months ago!!! This is the end!!!

I have been a staunch NC supporter, but today's Sun match review is an unmittigated PR disaster for the club. And it undermines his perfectly valid doubts about AP's management, since it calls into question his general judgement.

So maybe the questions should start about NCs stewardship, but this thread is addressed to the wrong person and is unhelpful.

You might be right, but it just does not seem rational that anyone with top level business experience would get so involved in that level of detail. I'm certain he has more important things to deal with. Employees at the club will probably come up with most ideas and yes he will have ultimate say over them, but I just can't imagine any CEO waking into a functional area of their business and telling people how to do stuff. NC is not an idiot. People like Markus Liehberr dont trust idiots and clearly the 2 have a very strong relationship.

Also Dune, btw, I think we should both be proud at being able to have a sensible debate on this without it decending to farce. With the previous threads on this subject going to utter ****e, maybe there's hope for the forum yet.

That is an absolute crock of shyte. They pevious board sanctioned a £7million spending spree gamble to gain promtion and failed. We then went into administration after the parachute payments fried up and you seriously want these muppets back involved with the club.

This is correct. He was actually in the ticket booth when I went to get my JPT ticket and personally sold it to me. He was manning the phones at the same time. Not only that, he was in the catering outlet on Saturday and was at the till where I bought my sausage roll. I picked up a ketchup bottle and he suggested that I try it with a bit of mustard instead as it complements the seasoning in the sausage meat (a recipe of his own, adapted from a Cortese family favourite). I'm also pretty sure that Cortese was the steward who asked me to sit down on Saturday, when I was stood for a little while. He was right too, as I didn't realise that I was stood in the way of an elderly lady. Hardest working chairman in the business.

I suppose you think that if you say it enough and say it loud enough people will take notice and agree with your viewpoint.

This approach is flawed and makes you look foolish and ill-informed.

What affects you doesn't neccessarily affect the majority and because you feel agrieved you feel others should. Your agenda is unclear because you fail to offer solutions other than the ridiculous notion that bringing members of the old board back is a solution to the problems that you feel exist. Remember these former people ( depending on who you mean specifically) screwed our club up with narrow minded short sighted, strategies that were not thought out properly or even implemented well.

The man who has a very successful career in business has entrusted his new acquisition to Nicola Cortese and that's good enough for me. If Markus Leibherr hadn't bought the club it may well not exist now and for that everyone should be grateful.

Small decisions in the overall picture will affect individuals and that is tough. As long as the majority is ok that's the best way of running a business. It's a cliche but you simply cannot please all the people all the time.

To quote another cliche, if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

I for one do not want what we've had for the last 20 years at least with Southampton, and with football in general.

Breaking the mould and upsetting the apple cart can be exciting. Those who do not like change will struggle to understand that.

I get what you are saying and as I mentioned in my post I’m certainly not panicking yet, I want to trust NC based on his stature and business experience.

Even just taking into consideration actual facts we know, as you say the season ticket instalment plan was handled poorly and I think we will have lost money due to some people not renewing.

I mentioned in a thread yesterday about the food running out half way through half time during at the Plymouth game, again more money lost.

We now have the media of the UK giving us negative press which in my opinion could again potentially cost the club money long term if it continues.

As you say they could all be perceived as minor points, but if the whole purpose of NC coming in was to treat us as a business and ensure we generate revenue wherever we can, these points to me suggest that some revenue is already being lost.

The buck stops with him, he’s been very keen (in the limited communication we have heard from him) to say how the club is his baby, so he is responsible (whatever role he takes in forming the ideas) for the results and outcomes of the plans that are put into action.

If the club is a success then he will be happy to take the credit, but equally that means that he’s also gonna get the flack when he does things the fan base doesn’t like.

As I’ve mentioned, I still have faith in NC however I have to admit that it’s recently starting to waver. My main wish is that we had just a little more communication coming from the club. I know we have no god given right to be told what’s going on, but wouldn’t it be nice.

I don't have a problem with evolution and change, but in a business such as football if you're going to "break the mould" you have to do it in such a way that you take others along with you. NC is untouchable in many fans eyes, but slowly but surely he is losing support. NC is confronting the press and now they are the clubs enemies he is going to find that every change he makes or suggests is scrutinised by them.

So because NC was fundermental in bring in ML and his money, means he is infallible and his decisions should never be questions.

We all all delighted that NC arrived when he did, and I hope he, and more particularly ML stays around for some time. HOWEVER, he is making a lot of gaffs, which arguably are the sort that could be avoided with some more experienced help.

Maybe that's exactly what he wants. Maybe his approach guarentees maximum publicity. If he's proven wrong in the long term then fair enough but his strategy is to creat a highly succesful and self-sustaining football club.

Sure he / his team will make the odd mistake and the odd decision that bucks the trend and looks out of place but I say judge him in two or four years.

You may feel that NC is slowly losing the support of the fans but I would argue that it is an extremely slow process. Most people are reasoned and not knee-jerk reactors.

The company he wanted to market the Official photos have pulled out of the deal because it would lead to them being ostracised by fleet street and it's looking certain that the press are going to stick together and not buy any photos - how is this going to help the club become self sustaining especially given the fact that the press pack are now enemies of SFC?

It's a just another example of Cortese's poor judegement.

If you're trying to be constructive in any argument it's logical not to start with destructive comments.

If, however, you are trying to draw attention to yourself your approach is effective.

I agree with this. I think we should definitely bring someone in. I too, don't know anything about ex-board members, but I definitely think that they are the people for the job. I was thinking too, perhaps we could bring in the man that runs my local Post Office. I mean, I don't really know enough about him but surely he could offer something to the club? There are other people I have ideas about too. I mean, I don't really know enough about them, but that shouldn't stop us appointing them. If anything, not knowing enough about the people who I am suggesting we give jobs to, is something Cortese would appreciate. After all, he is making all these crazy decisions based on not really knowing enough about English football and how things should be done the old-fashioned way, before all these foreigners came into the game with their silly ideas, indecipherable accents and confusing ways.
