Singing at St Marys

I'm trying to work out why it is generally only the Northam (and a bit of kingsland admittedly) stand that sings. At pretty much every game I've been to the bulk of the itchen, chapel and some of kingsland is quiet until someone scores. why is that?

Is it because unconfident types tend to frequent these areas? (I'm probably included in this as I feel a bit uncomfortable singing, especially if those around me aren't)

Is it because most people in the Northam stand are tanked up on booze? (generalisation i know, sorry.....Interestingly though, would those types still sing if sober??)

Is it because people have just got used to Northam stand being the "loud, singing stand" so the rest of the stadium doesn't?

Or any other ideas?

I guess on the back of Pardews comments tonight it would be good to try and change this somehow. Radio solent picked up on the lack of a kop tonight, especially with practically all of the northam stand given to Bournemouth fans. Maybe correcting this is the key?

Thoughts please.....

Getting back on track, I havent been to many home games but maybe those that have could confirm if its common for three quarters of the stadium to be filled with mutes whilst one stand does all the supporting??? I'm sure it's got worse at St Marys but that may just be because I spend most games in the Itchen stand these days.....

Option 'B'

I sit in the Itchen and lack confidence.

Thank you for sharing that with us. Good (in a round about way) that we have something in common :)

I do, however feel compelled to join in though if everyone around me starts. But I guess if everyone is in our boat then its never going to change

The atmosphere in the itchen north was all ways good, lively and intimidating for away fans, but in Ruperts wisdom he chose to shut the corner. The Itchen North was still ok but then they decided to close the top 8 rows of what was left, the Itchen is now dead!!! NC and the club had an opportunity to address this but chose not to. Any ho, good result anyway!

I sit in the Chapel, and constantly sing when the Northam does. I also attempt to spur the others into singing ; "we're the Chapel over here" on reply to the Northam, whilst standing up. Don't really get embarrassed, and it leaves me with a sense of satisfaction when people around me join in, resulting in the Northam cheering, and singing back "Chapel, give us a song", which today we did too. It's pretty pleasing when that happens.

Join in with the songs to help spur the team on. The constant OWTS for 15 minutes was quality, and I'd say it helped the team break the deadlock.

Completely agree, the crowd won it today for the club. Unfortunately those conference calls tomorrow will have be rasping cos I've lost my voice - hey ho, all in a good cause and I loved it when we all sang together.

But you have the answer. Put little pockets of away fans in each block around the ground. Cracking atmosphere

That would be a good idea. Or Maybe some fans from the northam stand could take on the responsibility of sitting in various different areas and spurring everyone on around them!? Itchen needs some leaders :-)

OWTS was good for 15 mins, only time we were heard over the b'muff fans tbh.

As said without Itchen North it aint the same.

The best bit of that for me was the amount of times the B'mouth fans tried to start a big chant to shut us up, which just made us louder. Was brilliant. Same again next week!

I tend to sit in the Kingsland South at the back, and usually no-one is singing around me, so I tend not to sing. I've always had a touch of agoraphobia so last season was the first season I got to quite a few games, and I just don't have the confidence to sing when others around me aren't. (Irrespective of once being a chorister and singing all over the world...)

Exceptions to this were in the FA Cup tie with Pompey, when everyone was singing anyway, and the Wembley game, where I didn't care if no-one was singing around me, I was 100% determined to enjoy myself and sing.

I've heard of people at the ground telling others to shut up - this IMO is disgraceful, it's not the effing ballet ffs. When I can finally get to a game this season, I think I'll sit in the Itchen North, they tend to sing pretty well.

This is the thing though, the atmosphere has never been the same at St Marys as it was at The Dell. In some ways, I miss The Dell and in others not. But the main thing I miss at St Marys is the atmosphere we used to have.

There was a time when all stands at The Dell used to get behind the team and you could clearly see the east and west stands clapping and singing along with the Milton and Archers, the WHOLE ground would be animated, don't really see this now, and I dont think we ever have at St Marys on the same scale as we did at The Dell, whatever we had there, why haven't we been able to take that same atmosphere to St Marys. Whats' the answer, we're still the same fans, supporting the same team, the ground got bigger, but what other than that changed?

League Status. IMO the crowds we're getting here are good for League One levels, but we'd be filling the ground out in the Premiership, and that would generate more atmosphere as the plastics would return in their droves and take part. As we (hopefully) move up through the leagues, the ground will fill up and I'm sure will get louder.

The continuous singing of the OWTS was the turning point in the game, the general atmosphere and my own enjoyment level last night. AP also referred to it in his post match interview. IMO this is something we need to start doing at each home game as it it will help create an intimidating atmosphere and spur on the team.

It also seriously p!$$es off the away fans, the B'muff fans barely sung after we got going.

I agree it is pretty much only the Northam/Kingsland north which sing regularly, although it is great when the Itchen North get going as well. The continuous OWTS does seem to spread slowly around the ground once it gets going.

Got a croaky throat now though.

Agreed that the OWTS gave the team a real boost just suprised someone on here hasnot moaned (yet !) that we need not to be so repetitive !! It seemed to start round about the time the ref made a couple of stupid decisions against us which got the crowd animated. Good on AP to recognise the fans part too.
