Non-Attenders?

This isn`t meant to be a dig at anyone but it seems to me from spending (too) much time on here that there are a great number of posters that do not actually go to games. I know that location accounts for a number of people and I understand that, but I am surprised by the number who seem to live within easy reach of SMS and seem to have strong opinions on everything from the Chairman to the kit-man, that don`t go. It would be interesting to know the proportion of users that do not go to games.

i dont wish to make excuses for the Iwont go while RL is here but for a lot of others at present the cost of living and job status is very pertinent.

Not trying to answer your question, but an interesting point I remember reading somewhere that as a club we had one of the highest percentage of regular attendees outside of the city, why is that.
I think it could be due to the fact we have a large area where we were the only PL club and so got those people interested years ago and htey still come.

It might be due to the fact that people in Southampton have one of the lowest amounts of dispendable income due to house prices not matching wages, so many move away?

I will continue to go to every home game whether we are in Premier or Conference league. Saints are my club & who is in charge or what league we play in makes no difference to my commitment to them.

However, those adopting the "won't go whilst RL is in charge" stance are shooting themselves & the club in the foot - we need to get higher gates to keep the banks at bay & without bigger crowds (1) we will have to sell our best propects & then (2) we will go bust. I doubt the banks would have backed the previous regime any longer, so RL has already brought us a major stay of execution.

But do you parcipate in theatre forums?

No, I tried but they're not as entertaining as this one....

p.s. I also supported "Team GB" at the Olympics but didn't go to a single event. May the Lord have mercy on me. (And, to answer the next question, "No, Olympic message boards are dull too")

I've just worked out that only 0.06% of Man Utd fans go to watch their team each game. Shocking.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/jun/26/advertising.business

Man Utd aims for 50m online fans

Manchester United is in talks with marketing groups including WPP, Publicis and Omnicom about an ambitious global strategic partnership to drive the club's digital fan base to 50 million users.

The club is in talks with four global companies - the fourth being McCann Worldgroup - with the aim of finding a partner to implement a five year plan to drive the club's global digital operation.

"We are a football club and a global brand, a media phenomenon, but at the moment we are not doing enough for our fans," the Manchester United group commercial director, Lee Daley, told MediaGuardian.co.uk.

"Our database is currently 4 million and we want to drive that to 50 million-plus globally within three years. Our future is community and content."

Mr Daley said that he intended to form a "strategic marketing relationship on a global basis" with one of the four groups.

"The right partner has to have global reach, it will be a network-based relationship and there has to be core strength in Asia," he added, speaking at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

"We are a global brand currently attached to local operating capability."

Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, told MediaGuardian.co.uk: "It is about raising awareness in this part of the business world.

"We are a worldwide brand but not everyone knows that and we can never be complacent."

Mr Daley, the former chief executive of Saatchi & Saatchi London, was responsible for bringing the club to the Cannes festival for the first time this year.

During the festival last week he gave a seminar with former United player and 1966 World Cup winner Bobby Charlton, now a club director, and on Friday hosted a media and marketing drinks on a motor yacht in the Cannes marina with Sir Alex in attendance.

Mr Daley said that the club was set to complete research into its global audience that was likely to show a fan base of around 90 million.

In 2003 the club conducted a similar project, using Mori, which put its global audience at around 75 million.

Mr Daley said that the increase was due to the increased penetration of the Premier League on TV around the globe.

He added that he was keen to tap new fan bases in regions such as Africa.

The figures are likely to show that the Man Utd fan base in China "has probably doubled in the last four years".

"The club has a remarkable following but for most fans there can never be a direct relationship of, say, going to Old Trafford," said Mr Daley.

"We need to figure out how to enhance the experience for the fans, increase the ways they can enjoy us. That is the aim of the strategic partnership I want to make."

That is probably because 99.04 people who support Man Utd do not live in the Manchester metropolitan Area. Or within a 200 mile radius.

Also 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot

A survey has shown that smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics.

But at the end of the day, statistics are a bit like mini-skirts - they give you ideas but hide the most important thing.

After the Blackpool and Barnsley games, I decided not to go to games until performances improved. Maybe I'm a bit of a fair weather fan, but I do like to feel the day out has been worthwhile. I'll be back for the Watford game, and whilst I'm only one of the missing 5000 or so, there must be a lot of others who are going to do the same.

So far this season I've only been to 2 home games and one away (about to become 2 away). My reasons for not attending more have been variously holidays, weddings and the difficulty of attending midweek games while living and working in London.

The one game I could have attended but didn't was Barnsley - I can't honestly give a good reason for my non-attendance - I just couldn't be bothered. Perhaps it's just that apathy that's killing the club?

listen on the radio as I do every game i cant get to. Still take loads of **** from every pompey fan in the area. 25 plus fuel bit to much for what has been served up recently. Although it did sound a decent game last night. Running my own business now so money tighter. Been a fan for 30 years now. Never went to many games because i played. doesnt mean I dont care. Didnt sleep the night before we relagated. Felt emotionally drained after watching the norwich 4-3 win. Elated when rasiak scored in the play offs. Dont dare call me not a fan because i cant always be there.

keep winning and they will be back

the ones that complain about the missing fans are the same ones who tell me , the game has changed since the 70's and 80's , small clubs cannot compete anymore etc etc.

What they do not grasp is that it has changed for spectators to.

Kids do not go on their own anymore?

very few use public transport

taking a family 4 to a game , even in the CCC, costs between £50 and £100 depending on where you live and is a bigger proportion of a familys deposable income than it every has been.

We had low attendances last season, when there was no credit crunch.

Since the financial turmoil has worsened the attendances have dropped accordingly.

I think the club doesn't do itself any favours with it's pricing policy, particularly where juniors are concerned.

I took my nephew last night and it cost £20 for a ticket. (He's 12).

If I was to take him to Coventry on Saturday it would cost £11.50.

I thought the kids for a quid promotion was a good idea but the usual suspects moaned and whined on this forum.

Having supported the Saints since I was a wide eyed 8 year old, even I am embarrassed by the lack of games I participate in. The first ten years of that I blame on boarding school, but I still followed the Saints via the media, and ran up huge phone bills listening to live Saints commentary via those premium rate numbers. (Yes my parents were not impressed...) Tha last ten years, when I really should have gone, (and still anticipate on doing), have been either financial, distance or shiftwork based problems.

Sounds like a giant whine, but if I lived in Hampshire and had a decent job with non-stupid hours, I would kill to go to SMS as much as possible. Being shy to the point of mild agoraphobia didn't help! (Although I'm largely over that particular affliction now!) :-D

There are many reasons (and variables) why I can't get to SMS as often as I'd like. As a pensioner I have limited income. The distance is 185 miles each way.(£35 petrol costs) The time (3 hours down 3 hours back) is not conducive to seeing an evening game. I had a car smash on the 23rd and am awaiting the Insurance assessors verdict. Now if I still lived in Dibden Purlieu I'd use my bus pass and get to all the home games. Lifes a ***** ennit?

So we've got 'fans', 'supporters' and 'followers' in descending order of importance to the human race. Seems a bit like a club that's getting increasingly difficult to join.

I do also wonder whether the year-on-year decline in attendance is evidence of something more long-term than the credit crunch, as Mike suggests, and that the club is slowly losing its roots among its 'customers'. Clubs like Norwich have a much more captive audience - there is nothing else remotely interesting going on there (trust me, I know).

The decline is going to need an imaginative response - and I think it'll take more than on-field success to claim back at least another 10,000 on the gate each week.

2 reasons - lowe and wilde

Pathetic.:( Why are bothering with this forum or any other Saints - related stuff if you cannot bother to get out and support the TEAM because it appears that you think that Lowe and Wilde ARE Southampton Football Club?
