ladysaint Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 Unfortunately there was an accident on Northam Road after the match yesterday at the pedestrian crossing just past the garage a young boy was hit by a car. Now whether this has any relevance to Northam Road not being closed after the match I cant say but it seems two league games into the season when the road is not now closed this has happened and a lot of the local residents were upset with the road not being closed. Hope the young lad is ok, looked in a bad way and was treated by paramedics for sometime.
Jimmy Gabriel's Halo Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 Yes, I passed that on the way out too. Didn't look good at all so I hope whoever the unfortunate person is will be OK. Correct me if I'm wrong though but is that stretch of the Northam Rd outside of where the road has always previously been closed ? I always got stuck at the big set of traffice lights just further west which in the last two games I have now sailed through.
Toomer Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 One person being knocked over is one to many, in the interest of public safety the Club and the Police need to have a re-think with regard to Northam Rd post match.
aintforever Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 It would be interesting to know the reasons why the road is not being closed any more. Who made the decision and why.
Thedelldays Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 what an odd and stupid decision....to allow 20k+ people out to cross a very busy road and not close it... it would only take 4 coppers to stand there for 30 mins or so
ladysaint Posted 22 August, 2010 Author Share Posted 22 August, 2010 You are right that part of the road wasnt closed but the traffic was held up by the first set of lights until the majority of pedestrians had crossed the road. Now as you say the traffic just goes sailing past. As I said I really dont know if the accident occured due to the road being opened after the games and the traffic allowed to flow freely or even what exactly happened, I just heard a loud thud and presumed it was a car going back into the other but unfortunately it was a lot more serious than this. JustMike Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 hate to play devils advocate and hope the lad is ok but there is a pedestrian crossing there, the old highway code applies on a match day the same as any other day
SET Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 hate to play devils advocate and hope the lad is ok but there is a pedestrian crossing there, the old highway code applies on a match day the same as any other day that maybe so but that pedestrian crossing is not big enough to cater for thousands of people arriving at once. Saint_clark Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 hate to play devils advocate and hope the lad is ok but there is a pedestrian crossing there, the old highway code applies on a match day the same as any other day Ah but that's the point, it would be safer if it DIDN'T apply and the road was just shut for half an hour. Charlie Wayman Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 hate to play devils advocate and hope the lad is ok but there is a pedestrian crossing there, the old highway code applies on a match day the same as any other day Not very helpful Mike, as you must realise real life isn't like that. Most people won't walk 20 yards to use a crossing. What is wrong is to knee-jerk to immediate conclusions about any links between this accident and the decision to allow normal traffic flows along Northam Road. The accident may or may not be related to non-closure. Pray for the lad's recovery...
shurlock Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 The Club is making an effort, advertising on the screens in the stadium and stewards holding boards along the route outside to the effect that northam road is a public highway... Saint137 Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 Its an idiotic decision by the authorities/club/whoever, its bad enough walking down towards the Itchen Bridge after the game with cars trying to filter past pedestrians - that just tends to lead to little confrontations because the road is narrower. It was only a matter of time before someone was injured in Northam Rd. If the authorities won't close it we as fans should it would only take a few big lads standing in the road before the railway bridge.
paulwantsapint Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 Maybe camera cop could stop the traffic or at least impose a 10mph limit after games with a speed gun Hope the kid isn't badly hurt & returns to SMS quickly
saint_mears Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 The road is closed now because the police no longer have the powers to do so. So the club would have to apply to the council i think for every single match at St Marys and they would also have to provide an alternative sign posted route. so22saint Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 I was in the car behind when this happened, and called the ambulance while my wife (a nurse luckily) attended to the lad. First things first, the lad should be ok - he had a suspected broken leg and had cut his nose when he hit the deck but the traffic was doing about 30 and he was clipped by the wing mirror. Once the police and ambulance arrived they told us to leave so we did. As the the road being closed, basically he ran out between the stationary cars approaching the bridge without realising the traffic was moving the other way. The driver of the other car couldn't do anything about it and can't be at fault. He was on the crossing but the lights were green. If the road was shut then yeah, he wouldn't have been hit but he wouldn't have been hit if he'd have been paying attention either (his dad, who was livid, said he had form for this as well). Key thing is that he looked like he'd be ok.
ladysaint Posted 22 August, 2010 Author Share Posted 22 August, 2010 Thanks for this update obviously didnt know much about what happened as just approaching the crossing when it occured. Glad the lad is going to be ok and the people who were in the car that hit him were not at fault.
Rebel Posted 22 August, 2010 Share Posted 22 August, 2010 I have a feeling it all comes down to policing costs - either the club or the police are saving money by not closing the road for 20 minutes

Soton city council are responsible for the road closures, not the Police. Mate at SCC said there were regular complaints about the road being closed......so you can't win either way !
